Dandeli is a small town in Uttara Kannada, in the Western Ghats of north-western Karnataka, at roughly 470 metres above sea level. It sits beside the Kali river and next to the Dandeli-Anshi (Kali) Tiger Reserve, which is why visitors come: white-water rafting, jungle safaris, birdwatching and short forest walks, in a place that is far calmer than the beach and hill-station circuits nearby.
The town itself is a working industrial and market centre, so the real appeal lies in the surrounding forest and river. Rafting on the Kali is the main attraction, run as Class II to III rapids over a few hours. The forest department offers jeep safaris into the reserve, and sights such as Syntheri Rocks, Kavala Caves, Supa Dam and the crocodile park spread out along forest roads rather than in town.
Time your trip with the season. Roughly November to February is the comfortable window; April and May are hot, and the monsoon brings very heavy rain that interrupts rafting and safaris. Most activity operators work October to June, depending on dam releases and forest permissions.
For families, Dandeli works best as a two- or three-night stay at a river camp, with one active day and one slower forest day. Older travellers can enjoy the safari, crocodile park and Supa Dam, and skip rafting, Kavala Caves and long stair walks.
