Why it matters

Why Mawlynnong Sky View is worth your time

The Sky View is a village-made viewing tower and a reminder of Meghalaya's traditions of bamboo building. It was built by a local teacher, Rishop Khongthongreh, according to Outlook, and it was designed to let visitors look over the village and the Bangladesh plains.

It is a modest structure, but it shows how Mawlynnong's community has turned its landscape into something visitors can enjoy, while keeping control of how it is managed.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk to the tower from the village lanes and look at the structure before you decide. It is made of bamboo poles tied with natural ropes, with no metal, and rises about 26 m; the sections are steep and narrow. If you climb, go one at a time on the stairs, hold tightly and do not rush.

From the top you can look across the village roofs, the green hills and, on a clear day, towards the plains beyond, which are in Bangladesh. Haze or cloud can blank the view, so a clear morning is best. Keep bags secure and phones tight.

Be aware that the structure is rebuilt and maintained by locals and conditions vary. If a section looks worn or wet, skip it. There is plenty to enjoy at ground level, including the lanes and the nearby root bridge.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check the tower looks dry and sound
  • Climb one at a time and hold on
  • Skip in rain or if dizzy
  • Carry small change for the fee
