Dawki travel guide

A small border town where the Umngot river runs so clear that boats seem to hang in the air, with root bridges, falls and a very clean village within day-trip range.

Dawki is a small town in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, sitting right on the border with Bangladesh. Most people come for one thing, the Umngot river, whose water is clear enough in the dry months that a boat appears to float above its own shadow on the stones below. A suspension bridge built by the British in 1932 crosses it, and downstream the river carries on into Bangladesh. The town is also a working border post, so alongside the tourist boats you will see long lines of trucks, mostly carrying coal.

The river stretch splits into three bases. Dawki itself has the bridge, the boat jetties and the border view. Shnongpdeng, roughly 8 km upriver, is the quieter village for riverside camping, kayaking and snorkelling. Darrang sits on the same stretch of the Umngot. Further afield are Mawlynnong village with its bamboo watchtower and the Riwai living root bridge, and Krang Suri falls on the Jaintia Hills side. None of these are close to each other on a map the way they look, so decide early which ones you really want.

Plan for the road more than for the sights. Dawki is roughly 80 to 85 km from Shillong, which is a three-hour drive, and the road has been under widening work. Late 2025 reports linked soil and debris from that work to a murkier river, so check recent photos before promising anyone the glass-like water. The best window is the dry season, November to March, with October and April on either side. For parents and older travellers this works well as one full day from Shillong, or better, one night in a riverside homestay, as long as you are comfortable with steps down to the jetties and no hospital nearby.

Dawki itinerary

One good day

1 day in Dawki

Leave Shillong early, allowing about three hours each way, and expect to reach Dawki before lunch. Walk onto the suspension bridge for the view along the Umngot, then take a boat ride from the jetty; agree the price and duration before boarding. Have lunch in town, then spend a short while at the border post viewpoint, staying well back from anything fenced or restricted. Start the return drive by mid-afternoon so you are on the mountain section before dark. If you have a full tank of energy, stop at Mawlynnong on the way back and see the Sky View tower and Riwai root bridge, but be honest that this makes a very long day.

What and where to eat in Dawki.

Food to try in Dawki

Food and restaurants

Eating in Dawki is simple. Small cafes and stalls near the jetty and the bridge serve rice, dal, noodles, momos, omelettes and tea, and homestays and camps in Dawki and Shnongpdeng usually cook a set meal for guests. Khasi dishes such as jadoh (rice cooked with meat) and dohneiiong (pork with black sesame) are common across Meghalaya, so ask your host what is made that day. Pork features heavily on Khasi menus; vegetarians should ask for vegetable dishes when booking.

Do not expect a long list of restaurants. Carry water and light snacks for the drive, and consider eating a proper meal in Shillong before you set out. Stick to bottled or filtered water, and be cautious with raw salads.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Dawki

Shopping

Shopping is minimal and informal. Small stalls near the bridge and at Mawlynnong sell cane and bamboo items, local honey, pineapples in season and simple souvenirs. At Mawlynnong, bamboo craft and local produce are the usual buys. Shillong is the better place for textiles, Khasi jewellery and handloom shawls, so save serious shopping for the drive back. Prices are small and fixed at most stalls, but ask before you buy anything made of wood or bamboo that must travel by air.

Choose without overthinking

Which Dawki experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Dawki town or Shnongpdeng as a base?

Choose Dawki for convenience: the bridge, jetty and shops are within a short walk and it is closer to the road. Choose Shnongpdeng if you want a quieter riverside night, kayaking or a camp, and are happy with basic facilities and steps.

Boat ride or kayak and snorkelling?

A boat ride is easy for all ages and takes under an hour. Kayaking and snorkelling suit fitter travellers who are happy in water, and need good clarity and a life jacket. For parents, stick to the boat.

One long day from Shillong or a night at the river?

A day trip works for fit travellers who can take six hours of driving. A night at the river removes that strain, lets you see the water in morning light and makes Shnongpdeng or Mawlynnong realistic.

Mawlynnong or Krang Suri as the add-on?

Mawlynnong is a village stroll with a bamboo tower and root bridge, best as a day from Shillong. Krang Suri is a waterfall with a swimming pool and sits on the Jowai side, so it suits a drive in or out via Amlarem.

Know before you go

Dawki travel tips

  1. 01

    Water clarity

The famous floating-boat effect depends on the season and on recent work upstream. Look at photos from the past week, not old posts, and expect cloudier water after rain.

  2. 02

    Getting there

Shillong to Dawki is roughly 80 to 85 km on NH206, about three hours, and the road has been under widening work. Leave early and start the return by mid-afternoon.

  3. 03

    Boating

Prices are per boat and are usually set at the jetty. Agree the price, the duration and the route before you board, and wear a life jacket if offered.

  4. 04

    Border etiquette

Dawki is a working border post. Stay on open public areas, follow signs and officials, and ask before photographing security posts or the checkpoint.

  5. 05

    Money and signal

Carry cash, since card acceptance is patchy and ATMs are few. Mobile signal can drop in the valleys, so download maps and confirm plans before you set out.

  6. 06

    What to wear

Non-slip shoes for jetties and wet steps, a light rain jacket in any season, and sun protection. Winter mornings are cool, so add a light layer.

  7. 07

    Monsoon cautions

From June to September, heavy rain brings landslides on the hill roads and a muddier river. Ask your driver about road conditions the day before, and allow spare time.

  8. 08

    Opening hours

Tourism listings give visiting hours of 6 am to 6 pm for the river area. Aim to be back on the main road before dark, because the hill sections are tiring after sunset.

Dawki with elderly parents: what to know

  • Do not try Shillong to Dawki and back in a single day if anyone tires easily. Three hours each way on mountain roads is the real strain; one night out is kinder.
  • The suspension bridge and the jetty are the easiest parts. Boat boarding involves a few steps and a step down into a narrow boat, so ask the boatman to hold the boat steady and wear non-slip shoes.

Roughly 80 to 85 km, which is about three hours by road in normal conditions. Plan on longer in the rains or during road work.

When is the Umngot river clearest?

In the dry season, from about November to March, when the water is at its clearest. The river is murkier in heavy rain, and late 2025 reports said road-widening work had clouded the water, so check recent photos.

Can you cross into Bangladesh at Dawki?

Dawki is a working Integrated Check Post with Tamabil on the other side, used mainly for trade. Crossing rules and documents change; do not rely on informal accounts, and check with the authorities before any plan to cross.

Is Dawki suitable for elderly parents?

Yes, with care. The bridge and boating are gentle, but the three-hour road drive and steps to the water are the real challenge. Stay a night if you can.

A full day from Shillong covers the bridge and a boat ride. Two days lets you add Shnongpdeng or Mawlynnong without rushing.
