Key hubs

Dawki airport and railway station

Airport
Guwahati (GAU) is the main gateway, about 200 km away; Shillong airport (SHL) is closer but has limited services. Road time from either is several hours.
Railway station
No railhead at Dawki. The nearest major station is Guwahati (GHY), roughly 5 hours by road, with Shillong as the usual overnight stop in between.
Getting around
Shared taxis run from Shillong on NH206; a hired car and driver is easier for Shnongpdeng, Mawlynnong and Krang Suri. Boats and short walks cover the river.

How to reach Dawki by air

Guwahati (GAU) is the main gateway, roughly 200 km from Dawki by road; allow five hours or more. Shillong airport (SHL) is closer, but services are limited, so check flights first.

How to reach Dawki by train

There is no railhead at Dawki. The nearest major station is Guwahati (GHY), about five hours away by road, with most travellers breaking the journey in Shillong.

How to reach Dawki by road

Dawki is roughly 80 to 85 km from Shillong along NH206, about three hours by road. It can also be reached from Jowai via Amlarem. Check conditions in the monsoon, when landslides and road work can slow the route.

Getting around Dawki

Shared taxis run from Shillong, but a hired car with driver is more flexible, especially for Shnongpdeng, Mawlynnong and Krang Suri. At Dawki, you walk to the bridge and take boats from the jetty.

Easy transfers to and in Dawki

  • Do not try Shillong to Dawki and back in a single day if anyone tires easily. Three hours each way on mountain roads is the real strain; one night out is kinder.
  • Carry any regular medicines, a basic first-aid kit and snacks; medical care near the river is limited and the nearest large hospitals are in Shillong.
  • Hire a car and driver for the whole trip so you control stops and can rest. Shared taxis are cheaper but slower and tighter.
  • If it has rained heavily, ask your driver about landslides and road conditions the day before; hill roads can close without warning.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
