Area by area

Dawki neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Dawki town

Best for: Short stays and travellers who want to walk to the bridge and jetty

Good to know: The most convenient base for boats and the bridge. Expect basic lodges and guesthouses and a working border-town feel, with truck traffic on the main road. Check the exact room, bathroom and parking set-up before booking, especially if travelling with elders.

Sights in this area: Dawki Suspension Bridge

  2. 02

    Shnongpdeng

Best for: Riverside camping, kayaking and quieter evenings

Good to know: About 8 km upriver of Dawki. Camps and homestays sit near the water, which is lovely but means steps, uneven paths and basic facilities. Good for families who want a night by the river; less suitable for anyone who needs lifts or ground-floor bathrooms.

  3. 03

Shillong (base, with its own guide)

Best for: Travellers who want comfort, hospitals and a hotel choice

Good to know: The practical base for older travellers. Dawki is about a three-hour drive each way, so you trade a long day for better beds and food. See the separate Shillong guide on this site for places to stay.

  4. 04

    Mawlynnong guesthouses

Best for: A village night after the Sky View and root bridge

Good to know: A handful of basic guesthouses and homestays serve visitors in the village. Book ahead in peak season and ask about bathrooms and heating before you commit.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
