Before you go
Deogarh with elderly parents: what to know
- Ask for a ground-level room at Deogarh Mahal; the stairs are steep and narrow.
- Take a driver for all outings, because there is no reliable public transport to the sights.
- Keep the first day light after the long road transfer from Udaipur.
- Visit the lake and temple in the morning or late afternoon to avoid heat.
- Check train timetables with North Western Railway or IRCTC before planning the ghat railway ride.
Easiest first
Places in Deogarh sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Deogarh school of miniature painting (Culture and craft · 1–2 hours) — Mostly seated viewing in rooms and shops, with short walks in the lanes. The lanes around the town centre are uneven and busy at midday, so a car to the door helps.
- Fort Seengh Sagar (Places to visit · 2–3 hours for a visit; longer for an overnight stay) — Level lakeside paths and a short approach make this gentler than the main palace, but there is little shade in warm months and access is by a rural road or bridge. Check with the hotel about transfers.
- Kamli Ghat to Phulad heritage train ride (Places to visit · Half a day to a full day depending on the service) — Seated and mostly level, but platforms at small stations are low and coaches can have high steps. Carry water, and check whether the service you choose has a reserved seat and an on-board toilet.
- Rajsamand Lake and Nau Chowki (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — Level dam and stepped ghats; the steps at the ghats are broad but can be slippery. There is some shade at the pavilions.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Anjaneshwar Mahadev Temple (Places of worship · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The cave shrine involves a short approach with steps and uneven floors, and the inside is cramped, dim and often damp. Older visitors may prefer to see the exterior and shrine entrance only, with a family member to help.
- Deogarh Mahal (Places to visit · A night or two as a guest; 1–2 hours for an arranged visit or meal) — The palace climbs a hill and has steep, narrow stairways and terraces inside thick walls, so ask the hotel for a ground-level suite and about vehicle access to the upper courtyards. Evenings on the ramparts are cool but breezy.
