Before you go

Digha with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan beach time for sunrise and the hour before sunset; midday sun, humidity and the lack of shade are tiring even in winter.
  • Choose a hotel near the beach with a lift and easy vehicle access, since walking on soft sand is hard for older knees.
  • The aquarium, science centre and Amrabati Park are flat and mostly indoors or shaded, which makes them good rest-hour options.
  • Do not rely on swimming. Stay in the shallows, follow lifeguard advice and avoid the sea in rough weather and the monsoon.
  • Hire a car for day trips to Shankarpur, Talsari and Chandaneswar; local transport links are limited and the roads can be affected by erosion.
  • Eat seafood only where it is freshly cooked and hot, and drink bottled or filtered water.

Easiest first

Places in Digha sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (10)

  • Amrabati Park (Places to visit · 1-2 hours) — Paths are mostly flat and there is more shade than on the beach, with seating. Boat rides involve stepping into a boat, which may be difficult for those with limited mobility.
  • Chandaneswar Temple (Places of worship · 1-1.5 hours plus travel) — Mostly level around the shrine, but crowded at festivals. Wear easy footwear and take a car; avoid the fair period if you have mobility issues.
  • Digha Gate (Places to visit · 10-15 minutes) — A roadside stop with no seating. Ask your driver to park safely rather than stopping on the carriageway; there is traffic on the highway.
  • Digha Science Centre (Culture and craft · 1.5-2.5 hours) — Mostly indoors and level, with benches and cooler spaces. Some galleries are dim and there is a science park outdoors; older visitors can skip it and stay indoors.
  • Marine Aquarium and Regional Centre (Places to visit · 45-60 minutes) — Small, indoors and mostly level, so it suits older visitors who need a cool break. Lighting is dim and some galleries may have narrow passages; ask about seating.
  • Nehru Market (Shopping · 45-90 minutes) — A flat, busy market with narrow gaps and crowds. Seating is limited; plan to go with a companion and take breaks at a nearby eatery.
  • New Digha Beach (Places to visit · 1-2 hours, or a relaxed half day) — Mostly level and open, with soft sand near the water and little shade. Take a driver or an auto from your hotel at the edges of the day, and sit on the higher dry sand rather than walking to the waterline if mobility is limited.
  • Old Digha Beach (Places to visit · 1-2 hours, ideally split between sunrise and late afternoon) — The promenade is flat and paved, with stalls and benches in places but little shade. Older visitors do best at dawn and in the evening; the sand itself is soft, so wear sandals that are easy to take off.
  • Shankarpur Beach and Fishing Harbour (Places to visit · Half a day) — Mostly flat, with soft sand and uneven harbour ground. Take a car and keep the visit short in the heat; there is limited shade and few facilities.
  • Talsari Beach (Places to visit · Half a day) — Flat sand and a calm coast, but few facilities and limited shade. Go by car and carry water; the long, soft sand can tire older walkers.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Digha Jagannath Temple (Places of worship · 1-1.5 hours) — The complex is large and there is a lot of open-air walking on stone, with queueing at busy times. Ask about seating and assistance at the gate, and avoid midday when the paving is hot.
  • Mohana Watch Point and Fish Market (Places to visit · 1-1.5 hours) — The ground can be wet, uneven and slippery, with crowds and a strong smell. It is best for visitors who are steady on their feet; older travellers can watch from the road or the watch point.
  • Raibania Fort (Places to visit · Half a day including the drive) — Uneven ground, grass and low earthen mounds, with no seating, shade or toilets reported. Better suited to able walkers; seniors can enjoy the countryside from the car and view the nearer remains.

Practical tips for Digha

  • Heat and humidity. Even in the cooler season, midday is hot and humid with little shade. Plan outdoor time for early morning and late afternoon, and carry water and a hat.
  • Monsoon and cyclones. June to September brings heavy rain and a rough sea, and cyclones can affect this coast at certain times. Check forecasts and local advice, and be flexible with dates.
  • Sea safety. The shore is shallow but currents change. Swim only in calm conditions, stay in the shallows and heed lifeguards and flags. Keep an eye on children at all times.
  • Getting around. Autos and local taxis cover the resort. For Shankarpur, Talsari and Chandaneswar, hire a car and agree the return trip and price in advance.
  • Weekends and holidays. Digha fills at weekends and during holidays, and hotel prices rise. Book ahead for peak periods and consider a weekday stay.
  • Money. Carry some cash for stalls, autos and small shops, and confirm card acceptance at your hotel and restaurants. Agree prices before using rides or services.
  • Dress. Light cotton clothes suit the climate. Dress modestly at temples and carry footwear that is easy to remove.
  • Erosion and roads. Parts of the coast have faced erosion, and some stretches of road may be affected. Ask your driver or hotel about current conditions before day trips.
