Day 1: Monastery, village and hot spring
Start at Thupsung Dhargye Ling in the morning, when the courtyards are quiet and the valley is clear. Drive down to Dirang Dzong village for a slow walk among the old stone houses, then have lunch in town. After a rest, visit the hot spring a few kilometres out, and if you have the energy, stroll along the Dirang river. Keep the evening free; the valley cools quickly after sunset.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Dirang Dzong Village 1 to 2 hours Moderate Morning or late afternoon; October to April Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Dirang Dzong Village: Lanes are narrow, stony and sloped, with few railings or benches. A walking stick helps, and the lower lanes are easier than the upper village. Keep an eye on footing after rain.

Day 2: Thembang or Mandala Top
Choose one long outing. Thembang offers a fortified Monpa village and hill views; Mandala Top offers 108 stupas and a cold, windy ridge. Go early, carry layers and food, and be back before dusk on a mountain road.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Mandala Top Half a day, including the drive Moderate Late morning on a clear day; October to April, wrapped up warmly Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Mandala Top: The road is winding and bumpy, and the site is just under 10,000 feet, so altitude and cold can tire older visitors. There are few toilets and little shelter, so choose another outing if any health issues arise.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Dirang trip for parents and children
- Spend at least one night here before going on to Tawang; at this altitude the body adjusts gradually, and Dirang is the gentlest place to do it.
- Choose a ground-floor room or a hotel with a lift, and check for heating and hot water between November and March.
- Carry regular medicines for the whole trip plus extras. Pharmacies are limited, and the nearest large hospitals are far away.
- Plan only one outing a day. Road times are long and winding, and tiredness and car sickness build up.
- Sights such as Dirang Dzong, Kalachakra Gompa and the hot spring involve steps or uneven paths. Ask the driver about the nearest drop-off point.
- Keep warm layers, a rain jacket and sturdy shoes in the car. Weather can change within an hour, even in the best months.
