Plan 01

1 day in Diu

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, old town and sunset

Start at Diu Fort in the first hour after opening and walk the ramparts. Then enter the old town through the Zampa Gateway, see St Paul's Church and the St Thomas Church museum, and have lunch at O'Coqueiro. Rest in the heat of the afternoon. In the late afternoon, drive to Nagoa Beach for a walk and then return via Chakratirth Beach for sunset, stopping at the INS Khukri Memorial.

INS Khukri Memorial20–40 minutesEasyLate afternoon, combined with the sunset at Chakratirth

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Diu Fort: The ramparts are broad but largely shadeless, with uneven stone and some ramps and steps between levels. Seating is limited. Older visitors do well with a morning visit, a hat, water and a decision to skip the highest bastions if the stones look slippery.

With parents at Chakratirth Beach: The viewing areas are close to the road, but the rocks are uneven and wet in spray, with few handrails. Older visitors can watch the sunset from the upper edge and avoid the rocks. Take a stool or a seat in the car if you want to stay a while.

With parents at Gangeshwar Mahadev Temple: Reaching the lingas involves rocky steps and a slippery, uneven surface close to the water, with little to hold. Older visitors can enjoy the temple from the upper area and avoid the lower rocks in rough seas.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Diu trip for parents and children

  • Visit Diu Fort and the Naida Caves in the first or last hours of daylight, because the ramparts have almost no shade and the stone gets very hot.
  • Choose the old town churches, the museum and the Zampa Gateway as your easy, level sights, and keep the Panikotha boat trip and the shore shrine for days when you feel steady.
  • Stay near the old town or Ghoghla if walking is limited, since both put restaurants and heritage within short distances.
  • Carry water, a hat and sun protection at all times, as the coastal humidity makes heat tiring even in winter.
  • Hire a taxi with a driver for beach days, and plan a rest between the morning sights and the evening sunset.
  • Heat and sun: Even in the cooler months the fort and beaches have little shade, so go early or late and carry water, a hat and sunscreen. April and May are hot and humid.
