Dungarpur sits in the hills of Vagad, close to the Gujarat border, and it feels removed from the better-known Rajasthan circuit. The town is the seat of the elder branch of the Guhilot family of Mewar, and it grew around a hilltop palace and a lake. Names for its founding vary in the records, but the Juna Mahal, its first palace, has origins in the late 13th century.

The pleasures here are small and specific. The Juna Mahal is a seven-storey palace-fort with interiors painted and mirror-inlaid over several centuries. Udai Bilas Palace, a 19th-century residence, stands on Gaib Sagar Lake, with the Shrinathji shrine and the Vijay Rajrajeshwar temple on the same shore. In the countryside you find Deo Somnath, a 12th-century stone Shiva temple, and Baneshwar, where the Som and Mahi rivers meet and Bhil pilgrims gather each winter.

It is an easy place for older travellers who accept a slow pace. The lakeside town is flat and compact, while the fort has many stairs and the countryside sights need a car. Plan two days, use a hotel or Udai Bilas Palace to arrange access, and treat it as a quiet stop between Udaipur and Gujarat.

Food to try in Dungarpur

Food and restaurants

Food in Dungarpur is simple and regional. Expect dal baati churma, makki ki roti, bajra roti, lapsi, malpua and chaas at home-style restaurants and at the palace hotel. Check ahead for vegetarian and Jain options, and book dinner at Udai Bilas Palace if you want a sit-down meal with the lake view. For snacks, ask your hotel for local sweet and savoury shops in the old town.

Shopping in Dungarpur

Shopping

Shopping is limited and local. Dungarpur is known for its gold and silversmiths, lacquer-painted wooden toys and decorative picture frames. Ask at your hotel for reliable shops, agree prices before buying, and keep receipts for jewellery. Do not expect a large bazaar; the old town lanes have everyday shops, and the best browsing is a short walk after the evening lake stroll.

Choose without overthinking

Which Dungarpur experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Juna Mahal or Udai Bilas Palace, if you only have time for one?

Choose Juna Mahal for painted interiors and old-fort atmosphere, accepting the stairs and the need to arrange access. Choose Udai Bilas Palace if you want a level, comfortable visit with lake views and a meal.

Deo Somnath or Baneshwar for a day trip?

Deo Somnath is closer, about 25 km, and suits those interested in temple architecture. Baneshwar is farther and more cultural, a river-island pilgrimage especially lively at the Magh fair.

Baneshwar during the fair or outside it?

Come during the fair if you want to see the tribal gathering and can handle crowds and basic facilities. Visit outside the fair for quiet riverbank time and easier logistics.
