Plan 01

1 day in Dungarpur

  1. 01

Day 1: Palace, lake and temples

Start at Juna Mahal in the morning, after confirming access through Udai Bilas Palace, and give the painted interiors an hour or two. Move to Udai Bilas Palace for a rest and lunch, then walk the Gaib Sagar shore at a gentle pace. Visit the Shrinathji temple and the Vijay Rajrajeshwar temple before sunset, and finish with tea on the palace terrace.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Juna Mahal1.5 to 2 hoursDemandingMorning on a clear day; October to March for comfortable climbing
Udai Bilas Palace1 to 2 hoursEasyLate afternoon, when the light on the lake is soft; October to March

Pace: Juna Mahal involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Juna Mahal: Many steep stairs, uneven floors and low, narrow doorways that were built to slow attackers. There is little seating inside, so it suits steady walkers; others may prefer to see the exterior and the nearby lakeside palace instead.

  1. 01

    Day 1: The old town

Spend the morning at Juna Mahal, then lunch and rest at Udai Bilas Palace. In the late afternoon walk around Gaib Sagar and visit the Shrinathji temple.

Drive about 25 km to Deo Somnath in the morning, spend an hour at the stone temple, and return for lunch. Use the afternoon to revisit the lake or the palace museum.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Dungarpur trip for parents and children

  • Confirm Juna Mahal access through Udai Bilas Palace before you go; it has many steep stairs.
  • Choose a lakeside or ground-floor room, as upper floors in older buildings may lack lifts.
  • Plan town sights in the morning and late afternoon and rest at midday.
  • For Deo Somnath, Baneshwar or Galiakot, hire a car with driver and carry water.
  • Avoid Baneshwar on fair days if crowds are a problem; the fair falls in January or February.
  • Heat: April to June is very hot. Plan outings for early morning and rest through the afternoon.
