Before you go

Dungarpur with elderly parents: what to know

  • Confirm Juna Mahal access through Udai Bilas Palace before you go; it has many steep stairs.
  • Choose a lakeside or ground-floor room, as upper floors in older buildings may lack lifts.
  • Plan town sights in the morning and late afternoon and rest at midday.
  • For Deo Somnath, Baneshwar or Galiakot, hire a car with driver and carry water.
  • Avoid Baneshwar on fair days if crowds are a problem; the fair falls in January or February.

Easiest first

Places in Dungarpur sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (4)

  • Gaib Sagar Lake (Places to visit · 1 hour) — Flat edges and short walks, with temple steps at the shrines. Shade is limited on the open shore, so avoid midday in summer.
  • Galiakot (Places of worship · Half-day including travel) — Mostly level walking in town, with long road time. Seating and shade are available at the shrine complex, but check facilities in advance.
  • Shrinathji Temple, Dungarpur (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — A short, mostly level approach with a few temple steps. Seating is limited, and the interior can be crowded at festival times.
  • Udai Bilas Palace (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Mostly level walking on courtyards and terraces, with some steps between wings. Staff and chairs are available if you visit as a guest, so it is among the easier sights in town for older travellers.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Baneshwar Dham (Places of worship · Half to full day including travel) — Long road journey and uneven riverside paths. Boats and steps may be involved at the confluence, and facilities are basic, so older travellers should avoid fair days.
  • Deo Somnath Temple (Places to visit · 1 hour on site, plus about 45 minutes each way) — Level temple platform, but the approach includes steps and uneven stone. Shade is limited, so go early in the day and carry water.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Juna Mahal (Places to visit · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Many steep stairs, uneven floors and low, narrow doorways that were built to slow attackers. There is little seating inside, so it suits steady walkers; others may prefer to see the exterior and the nearby lakeside palace instead.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Dungarpur

  • Heat. April to June is very hot. Plan outings for early morning and rest through the afternoon.
  • Getting around. Autos suit the lake and temples in town. For country sights, hire a car with driver for the day.
  • Access to Juna Mahal. The palace is privately owned. Confirm access and any ticketing with Udai Bilas Palace before you go.
  • Walking and stairs. The old palace has steep stairs and low doors. The lakeside is flat; carry water for all outings.
  • Dress and etiquette. Cover shoulders and knees at temples and shrines and remove footwear. Ask before photographing worship.
  • Money. Carry some cash for temples, autos and small shops, since card acceptance is patchy outside the palace hotel.
  • Fair crowds. The Baneshwar fair, held in January or February, brings large crowds and limited facilities. Book transport ahead.
  • Food on the road. Country stops have few restaurants. Carry water and snacks on day trips.
