Why it matters

Why Sanghol Museum and Archaeological Site is worth your time

Sanghol shows that this part of Punjab had a deep past long before the Mughals or the Sikh Gurus. The mound has been occupied from around the late Harappan period to about the 6th century AD. A Buddhist stupa was excavated in 1968, and in 1985 archaeologists found 117 carved stone slabs dated to the 1st-2nd centuries AD, linked to Mathura-school Kushan art.

For a traveller who has spent the day on the Sikh and Mughal sites, it adds a very different and older layer of Punjab. It also gives context to the region's long position on trade and pilgrimage routes between the Indus and the Gangetic plain.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this as a separate half-day outing by car. Start in the museum, where finds from the site are displayed, including Kushan-period stone sculpture of the Mathura school and material from the late Harappan levels. Then walk to the excavated Buddhist stupa nearby.

Take your time with the carved stone slabs, many of which are figures, pillars and crossbars excavated in 1985. The finds that are most easily read are the sculptural pieces; coins and seals are best viewed with a guide or a printed catalogue. Many of the finest pieces from Sanghol are on display in the Government Museum in Chandigarh, so do not be surprised if you see only some of them here.

Pack water and a snack. Facilities are minimal, and the site is quiet outside school-trip days.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check museum days and timings before travelling
