The short answer

Shaheedi Jor Mela: what visitors should know first

Go only if you want the full pilgrim experience and can handle very large crowds. For most families and older travellers the days around the mela are the hardest time to visit; plan a different week if you want calm.

History and context

The story behind Shaheedi Jor Mela

The Shaheedi Jor Mela, also called Shaheedi Sabha, is held every December at Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib and nearby sites. It commemorates the 1705 martyrdom of the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh. Political rallies were once held on the second day but have recently stopped, according to Wikipedia.

Why it matters

Why Shaheedi Jor Mela is worth your time

The mela marks the martyrdom of Zorawar Singh and Fateh Singh, aged about nine and seven, in December 1705. For Sikhs, it is a time of mourning and remembrance rather than celebration. The gathering has been held for generations and fills the district with pilgrims.

Seeing it can be a powerful experience of collective devotion and community service. It is also an event that tests logistics: district authorities arrange parking, barricades, medical support and heavy policing, and the roads around Fatehgarh Sahib and Sirhind are often congested. Know what you are choosing before you plan around it.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

If you decide to go, arrive very early and expect to walk some distance from parking. Roads around the town fill with devotees, many arriving on foot or in tractor-trolleys. Dress warmly; late December mornings can be cold.

The programme includes kirtan, katha and deewan sessions organised by the SGPC, and dhadi jathas retelling the history through ballad singing. The first day is entirely devotional. Roadside langars run through the days, with food contributed by nearby villages.

A light-and-sound show about Sirhind's history is staged at Aam Khas Bagh during the mela. Keep valuables safe, stay with your group, and carry any medication. If you only want to see the gurdwaras calmly, visit a week before or after instead.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.
