Gumla is a district town on the southern Chotanagpur plateau, at about 650 metres, with a population of roughly 51,000 at the 2011 census. It is not a polished tourist centre. What it offers is a region with real history and real forest: the ruined capital of the Nagvanshi kings at Navratangarh, a sal-covered wildlife sanctuary at Palkot and a string of village shrines that still draw pilgrims.
The district sits in tribal Jharkhand, where Oraon, Munda and other communities have lived for centuries. Hindi, Sadri and Kurukh are all spoken, and festivals such as Sarhul and Karma mark the agricultural year. Most sights are scattered across villages and need a car and a driver; there are no coach tours and few signboards.
Travel here suits visitors who like to go slowly, ask directions and accept rough roads. Ranchi, about 90 km away, is the practical gateway and the better base for comfort. A day or two around Gumla is enough to see Navratangarh with Kapilnath temple, then add Anjan Dham or Palkot, and go in the cool months when roads are dry and the walking is easy.
