Plan 01

1 day in Gumla

  1. 01

    Day 1: Navratangarh and Kapilnath

Leave Gumla or Ranchi early by car and head to Doisa in Sisai block for Navratangarh. Spend a couple of hours walking the ruins, then visit the Kapilnath temple nearby. Stop at Nagfeni on the way back for a short break by the snake-shaped rock and the Jagannath temple. Carry water and food, as facilities are minimal.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Navratangarh1.5 to 2 hours on site; half a day with the drive and Kapilnath templeModerateNovember to February, in the morning; avoid the monsoon when approach roads and fields turn muddy
Kapilnath Temple30 to 45 minutesEasyMorning; Mahashivratri brings crowds if you want the festival atmosphere
Nagfeni45 to 60 minutesEasyMorning or late afternoon in the cool season; rath yatra season may be busy

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Navratangarh: The ground is uneven and partly overgrown, with broken masonry and no handrails, and there is little shade or seating. Older visitors can see the main ruined block and nearby temple with a short walk, but should wear sturdy shoes and carry water.

    Day 1: Nagvanshi trail

Visit Navratangarh and Kapilnath temple in the morning, stopping at Nagfeni on the way. After lunch in Gumla town, rest, then walk through the local market in the late afternoon.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Hill and forest

Drive about 18 km to Anjan Dham for the village and the Anjani cave climb, returning by midday. In the afternoon, take the Gumla to Simdega road to Palkot Wildlife Sanctuary for the dam and roadside forest areas, and be back before dusk.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Anjan Dham2 to 3 hours including the climbDemandingMorning in the cool season, before the climb gets hot
Palkot Wildlife SanctuaryHalf a dayModerateNovember to February; avoid the monsoon when tracks flood and leeches and mud make walking unpleasant

Pace: Anjan Dham involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Anjan Dham: The cave is on a hill about 4 km beyond the village, and the final stretch is a climb on uneven ground. Older visitors should plan only the lower temple area and avoid the heat of midday.

With parents at Palkot Wildlife Sanctuary: The easily reached roadside areas are manageable, but there are no marked trails or seating, so older visitors should stay close to the vehicle. Heat in April and May is tiring, and help is far away.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Gumla trip for parents and children

  • Use Ranchi as a comfortable base and make Gumla a long day trip with a hired car and driver.
  • Go between November and February; heat and monsoon rain both make the rough roads harder.
  • Navratangarh, Tanginath and Anjan involve uneven ground or climbs. Choose the lower areas if mobility is limited.
  • Carry water, snacks, medicines and a basic first-aid kit; village facilities are minimal and hospitals are in Gumla or Ranchi.
  • Check road conditions before Tanginath and Palkot, and travel only in daylight.
  • Wear sturdy shoes and a hat; there is little shade at the ruins.
