The short answer

Dawar: what visitors should know first

Plan to stay here; there is no other practical base. Walk the main market and the river edge, visit the cultural centre, and keep expectations simple: basic rooms, limited services and cold evenings.

History and context

The story behind Dawar

The valley lay on the old Silk Route between Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan and was a resting place for traders and pilgrims. Dawar is described as the ancient capital of the Dards. After 1947 the border divided the wider region, and today Gurez is a tehsil of Bandipora district.

Population figures for the wider tehsil are about 38,000 in the 2011 census.

Why it matters

Why Dawar is worth your time

Wikipedia describes Dawar as the central township and tehsil headquarters of Gurez, and also as the ancient capital of the Dards. Gurez lay on a historic route towards Gilgit and carried traders and Haj pilgrims, which is why the valley's dress, songs and language link to communities on the other side of the mountains.

Today it is the one place in the valley that offers a bed, a meal and some services, so the quality of your trip depends on choosing a stay well and being flexible.

How to experience it

Dawar rewards an unhurried visit. Walk the small main market for tea, groceries and a sense of daily life, then follow the river for views of Habba Khatoon peak. Some old wooden log houses remain in the village and are worth looking at from the road, with their sloping roofs and plank shopfronts, though many are no longer occupied.

There are a few practical stops. A bank branch is reported in town, the fuel pump has limited hours, and mobile coverage is better around Dawar than further up the valley. Use the evening to charge devices and arrange the next day's driving.

Meals are generally cooked by guesthouses and often need ordering ahead. If you are vegetarian or on a restricted diet, say so on arrival. Dawar is also the starting point for the Shina cultural centre, riverside walks and trout permits.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book accommodation in advance and confirm heating and hot water
  • Carry cash; do not rely on ATMs
  • Order dinner by mid-afternoon
  • Charge devices when power is on
