A high Himalayan valley beyond Razdan Pass: a green river, a pyramid peak and Shina villages, reachable by road for only about half the year.

Gurez (also written Gurais) is a tehsil of Bandipora district in the far north of Jammu and Kashmir, about 123 km from Srinagar by the usual figure and close to the Line of Control. The Kishanganga river runs through it beneath a pyramid-shaped mountain named after the poet Habba Khatoon, and the small township of Dawar is where most visitors base themselves. It sits roughly 2,400 to 2,600 m above sea level, depending on which source you read.

The valley is not a resort. Gurez lies on an old route towards Gilgit, and its people are mostly Shina speakers, a Dardic community with its own language, dress and songs. The only road in is over Razdan Pass, at about 3,556 m, which heavy snow closes for several months each winter, leaving the valley largely cut off for around six months. That shapes everything: a short season, simple facilities, and a pace set by weather and army checkposts.

A trip here is a long drive for a quiet reward. Most people go for the scenery along the river, the peak at sunset, a visit to the Shina cultural museum and, if arrangements allow, the lower Tulail valley further east. Expect to carry original photo ID, cash and offline maps, to rely on a local driver, and to treat the days either side of the pass opening and closing as unreliable.

For older travellers the main issues are altitude, the length of the road and thin medical cover. With an easy first day, a slow schedule and sensible hydration, a three-day trip is realistic for many fit seniors, but this is not the place for anyone who needs frequent specialist care.

Gurez itinerary

One good day

1 day in Gurez

A one-day round trip from Srinagar is possible in principle but leaves little time in the valley after a long drive each way, so we advise against it. If you must, leave Srinagar at first light, stop briefly at Razdan Pass, reach Dawar by early afternoon, see the Habba Khatoon peak and the Kishanganga bank, and start back before dusk because the descent is slow in poor light.

Day-by-day plan →

Two days

2 days in Gurez

Leave Srinagar early and drive via Bandipora, with a pause to view Wular Lake. Climb through forest past Tragbal to Razdan Pass, then descend into the valley. Check in at Dawar, rest to adjust to the altitude, and walk by the Kishanganga in the late afternoon with the pyramid peak above you.

Day-by-day plan →

Three unhurried days

3 days in Gurez

Drive from Srinagar via Bandipora, Tragbal and Razdan Pass. Settle in at Dawar and keep the afternoon light: a short riverside walk, tea and an early night.

What and where to eat in Gurez.

Food to try in Gurez

Food and restaurants

Food in Gurez is simple, home-style Kashmiri cooking served in guesthouses and a few small eateries in Dawar: rice, dal, vegetable and mutton dishes, noon chai (salted pink tea) with kulcha, and local potatoes. Achoora is known locally for kala zeera (black cumin). Meals at many places need ordering ahead, so ask your host in the afternoon what will be cooked in the evening. Do not expect menus, long hours or much choice for special diets; carry snacks and any essential items.

On the road, Tragbal and Bandipora are the usual tea stops, with omelette and tea or chai and bread. Vegetarians and anyone avoiding mutton should say so clearly when booking.

Shopping in Gurez

Shopping

There is little to shop for in a conventional sense. Dawar has a small main market for groceries and daily goods. The Shina cultural centre has a souvenir section, which is a better source of locally themed items than anything you would find on the road. Carry cash, because the valley has limited banking and card acceptance. Fruit, dried goods and Kashmiri handicrafts are far easier to buy in Srinagar before or after the trip.

Choose without overthinking

Which Gurez experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Two nights or three nights in Gurez?

Two nights lets you reach Dawar, see the peak and the cultural centre and return, but the driving takes most of two days. Three nights gives a rest day and room for Tulail if access allows. Older travellers should lean to three.

Habba Khatoon peak or Shinon Meeras first?

Choose the peak for a late-afternoon walk when light is best and the cultural centre for the morning, when you are fresh. Together they cover the valley's landscape and its people in about one easy day around Dawar.

Private car from Srinagar or local taxis in Dawar?

A private car from Srinagar gives control over timing, which matters for crossing the pass in daylight. Locally hired taxis in Dawar are better for short valley hops and for the rough Tulail road, which is easier with a driver who knows it.

Early season or late season?

Early season has greener meadows and fuller river flow but a less predictable pass, and late season has clear skies and autumn colour but cold nights and early snow risk. July to September is the safest middle.

Know before you go

Gurez travel tips

  1. 01

    Road and pass

Razdan Pass, at about 3,556 m, is the only road in. Snow closes it for months, and dates vary by year. Check conditions with your driver or the Bandipora administration before leaving Srinagar.

  2. 02

    Permits and ID

Carry original photo ID (Aadhaar or passport) and photocopies. Army checkposts operate along the route. Published sources disagree about permits, so check current rules with the Bandipora administration or J&K Tourism shortly before travel.

  3. 03

    Altitude

Dawar is roughly 2,400 to 2,600 m and the pass is much higher. Ascend gently, avoid alcohol on the first night and descend if symptoms worsen.

  4. 04

    Fuel and repairs

Fill the tank in Bandipora. Fuel in the valley is limited and the Dawar pump has restricted hours, so do not count on it for emergencies.

  5. 05

    Money

Carry enough cash for the whole stay. There is a bank branch in Dawar but you should not plan around a working ATM.

  6. 06

    Mobile and power

Connectivity is patchy; postpaid SIMs are generally required in J&K and coverage drops beyond Dawar. Power can be limited to certain hours, so charge devices when you can.

  7. 07

    Dress

Pack warm layers, a windproof jacket, a hat and sun protection in every season. Dress modestly in villages and near shrines.

  8. 08

    Photography

Do not photograph army posts, checkpoints or border installations. When in doubt, ask your driver or a local before taking pictures near the Line of Control.

Gurez with elderly parents: what to know

  • Allow at least one night to settle in at Dawar. At roughly 2,400 to 2,600 m, and about 3,556 m at Razdan Pass, headaches and tiredness are possible; drink water and go slowly.
  • Carry regular medicines for the whole trip plus a spare. Dawar has only basic health facilities, and serious cases normally go to Srinagar.

Useful answers

Gurez FAQs

When is the best time to visit Gurez?

July to September is the most dependable window. The road over Razdan Pass is usually open from about May or June until October or early November, but opening and closing dates vary with snow, so confirm before booking.

How far is Gurez from Srinagar?

The commonly quoted distance is about 123 km, although some sources give higher figures. The drive takes roughly 5 to 8 hours depending on traffic, weather and checkpoints.

Do tourists need a permit for Gurez?

Published sources disagree and rules change. Indian visitors are generally reported to need original photo ID at army checkpoints; foreign nationals face stricter, changing requirements. Check with the Bandipora district administration or J&K Tourism shortly before you travel.

Can I visit Gurez in winter?

Not reliably. Heavy snow closes Razdan Pass for months, and the winter helicopter service has been described by officials as for local residents, not tourists.

Is Gurez suitable for older travellers?

Only for fit, well-prepared ones. The drive is long and high, medical help is limited and facilities are basic. Allow extra days and keep plans flexible.
