Before you go
Gurez with elderly parents: what to know
- Allow at least one night to settle in at Dawar. At roughly 2,400 to 2,600 m, and about 3,556 m at Razdan Pass, headaches and tiredness are possible; drink water and go slowly.
- Carry regular medicines for the whole trip plus a spare. Dawar has only basic health facilities, and serious cases normally go to Srinagar.
- Start the drive early, fill up with fuel in Bandipora and avoid crossing the pass in rain, fog or fading light.
- Pack warm layers even in July; evenings are cold and guesthouse heating can be basic.
- Carry cash and download offline maps. Mobile networks and ATMs are unreliable beyond the pass.
- Choose a ground-floor room if stairs are an issue, and confirm hot water and power backup before booking.
Easiest first
Places in Gurez sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (7)
- Dard-Shin Museum (private collection) (Culture and craft · 30–60 minutes) — It is a small house museum, so walking is minimal, but it is a private house and stairs are likely. Check ahead if mobility is a concern.
- Dawar (Places to visit · Half a day for a walk, with an overnight stay) — Roughly level main streets, but the settlement is spread out and the altitude of about 2,400 to 2,600 m can tire some visitors. Facilities include a basic hospital but serious cases go to Srinagar. Ask your hotel about stairs, heating and power backup.
- Habba Khatoon Peak (Places to visit · 1–3 hours for views and the spring) — Viewing from the river road and village is level and needs no effort. The path to the spring is short but uneven, and altitude of roughly 2,400 m plus cold evening air can tire some visitors. Climbing the peak itself is a mountaineering matter, not a stroll.
- Kishanganga River (Places to visit · 1–2 hours for riverside walks) — Short walks on the road and banks near Dawar are fairly level, but paths are uneven and the river is cold and fast. Keep older travellers away from steep banks, and carry a warm layer for evenings.
- Razdan Pass (Places to visit · 15–30 minutes at the summit) — The summit stop is level and you rarely need to walk far. The height of about 3,556 m can cause headaches or breathlessness, and wind and cold are strong even in summer. Do not rush here; sit in the car if anyone feels unwell.
- Shinon Meeras (Shina Cultural Centre) (Culture and craft · 1–1.5 hours) — The centre is a small museum, so walking is minimal. It is a good indoor stop when the cold or altitude is tiring, though we could not verify lifts or seating, so ask your host.
- Wular Lake (Places to visit · 1–2 hours) — Easy: viewpoints and lakeshore stops involve little walking. Facilities are limited, so carry water and snacks. The road view above the lake is level and requires no climb.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Trout fishing on the Kishanganga (Sports · Half a day) — Walking to the water involves uneven banks and cold, fast current, which is difficult for many older visitors. Fishing from a flat spot is possible but footing is slippery. Take care and go with a local guide.
- Tulail Valley (Places to visit · Full day from Dawar) — The road is rough and long, with limited facilities along it, so it is tiring for older or less mobile travellers. Altitude and cold add strain. Consider the valley around Dawar instead if energy is limited.

Practical tips for Gurez
- Road and pass. Razdan Pass, at about 3,556 m, is the only road in. Snow closes it for months, and dates vary by year. Check conditions with your driver or the Bandipora administration before leaving Srinagar.
- Permits and ID. Carry original photo ID (Aadhaar or passport) and photocopies. Army checkposts operate along the route. Published sources disagree about permits, so check current rules with the Bandipora administration or J&K Tourism shortly before travel.
- Altitude. Dawar is roughly 2,400 to 2,600 m and the pass is much higher. Ascend gently, avoid alcohol on the first night and descend if symptoms worsen.
- Fuel and repairs. Fill the tank in Bandipora. Fuel in the valley is limited and the Dawar pump has restricted hours, so do not count on it for emergencies.
- Money. Carry enough cash for the whole stay. There is a bank branch in Dawar but you should not plan around a working ATM.
- Mobile and power. Connectivity is patchy; postpaid SIMs are generally required in J&K and coverage drops beyond Dawar. Power can be limited to certain hours, so charge devices when you can.
- Dress. Pack warm layers, a windproof jacket, a hat and sun protection in every season. Dress modestly in villages and near shrines.
- Photography. Do not photograph army posts, checkpoints or border installations. When in doubt, ask your driver or a local before taking pictures near the Line of Control.
