Area by area

Gurez neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Dawar

Best for: Nearly all visitors, as the valley's main township

Good to know: Most accommodation is in and around Dawar: guesthouses, small hotels and a riverside campsite. Quality varies, so confirm hot water, power backup, meals and heating before you book. Electricity can be intermittent.

Sights in this area: Dard-Shin Museum (private collection), Dawar, Habba Khatoon Peak, Shinon Meeras (Shina Cultural Centre), Tulail Valley

  2. 02

Near the river, just outside Dawar

Best for: Travellers who want a quieter, scenic setting

Good to know: Camping and riverside stays offer views of Habba Khatoon peak but nights are cold and facilities simple; less suitable for older or less mobile guests.

  3. 03

    Bandipora (the night before)

Best for: Travellers who want a gentler first day or who start late

Good to know: Staying in Bandipora or on the Srinagar side lets you cross Razdan Pass in good morning light and avoids a very early start, though it adds a night to the trip.

Sights in this area: Dawar, Kishanganga River, Razdan Pass, Tulail Valley, Wular Lake

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
