The short answer
Wular Lake: what visitors should know first
Yes as a gentle stop at either end of the Gurez trip. Do not expect a resort: it is a large, shallow lake with local life and some water-sports facilities, best seen on a clear day.
History and context
The story behind Wular Lake
Tradition credits Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin with ordering the artificial island of Zaina Lank in the lake in 1444. Much of the lake was drained for willow plantations in the 1950s, and pollution from the Jhelum is a continuing concern.
Local legend also describes a drowned city of a king named Sudrasen.

Why it matters
Why Wular Lake is worth your time
The lake sits in a tectonic basin, fed by the Jhelum and by the Madhumati and Arin streams, at about 1,580 m. Wular was made a Wetland of National Importance in 1986 and designated a Ramsar site in 1990. It is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the subcontinent, though sources differ on exact rankings.
It matters here as the gentle opening to the Gurez road, and also as a place where the Kishanganga's diverted waters ultimately flow.

How to experience it
The simplest way to enjoy Wular is on the drive. The road from Bandipora towards Tragbal gives wide views of the lake, and a stop at a viewpoint breaks the journey nicely. From the lakeshore you will see boats and local fishing life.
If you have a spare hour, stop on the lakeshore near Bandipora and walk a little, or take a boat if one is offered. Boating and water sports were launched in cooperation with tourism departments, though availability varies.
Carry a hat and water. The lake's size, between about 30 and 189 sq km depending on the season, means it is better seen from a rise than from the shore.
