Ha Long Bay is a stretch of the Gulf of Tonkin in Quang Ninh province, in north-east Vietnam, crowded with roughly 2,000 limestone islets. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in 1994 and extended the listing in 2000 and 2023. The name means "descending dragon", and most visitors come for one thing: to sit on a boat deck while the karst towers slide past.
The bay is the water and the islands; Ha Long city is the mainland base on its shore. The city splits into two sides joined by the Bai Chay Bridge: Bai Chay, with the beach, hotels and cruise piers, and Hon Gai across the strait. Almost every trip starts at a pier here. From there, day cruises follow set routes that stop at caves such as Sung Sot, Thien Cung and Dau Go, at Ti Top island for a climb and a swim, and at Luon Cave for a rowing-boat or kayak passage into a tidal lagoon.
For Indian families the main decisions are the season, the length of the boat trip and how much walking you are willing to do. Winter is cool and often grey, the summer months are hot and wet, and the best-balanced weather is usually October to November and March to May. The caves involve stairs, Ti Top has a long staircase, and boat decks are shared with crowds. None of it is hard if you pick a shorter route and move slowly, but it is not a destination for rushing.
Food needs honest planning. Local cooking leans on seafood, and we could not verify any Indian or fully vegetarian restaurant in Ha Long from sources we opened, so the safe plan is to ask your hotel or cruise operator in advance for vegetarian meals, or to eat Indian food in Hanoi on either side of the trip. Keep your Hanoi days and your bay days separate in your head: Ha Long Bay is an overnight or a long day from the capital, not a quick stop.

Ha Long Bay itinerary
One good day
1 day in Ha Long Bay
Leave Hanoi early or stay the night before in Bai Chay, so that you reach the pier in the morning. Join a day cruise on one of the two classic routes: either Thien Cung and Dau Go caves with a floating-village stop, or Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top island and Luon Cave. Choose the first if anyone in the group finds stairs hard, since the second adds the Ti Top climb. Eat the meal on board (arrange vegetarian food in advance), return to the pier in the afternoon, and walk the Bai Chay promenade at dusk. Allow a long drive back to Hanoi, or sleep in Bai Chay and leave in the morning.
Day-by-day plan →Two days
2 days in Ha Long Bay
Take the Sung Sot, Ti Top and Luon route. Visit Sung Sot Cave first for its large chambers and the view back across the bay, then climb Ti Top only if the group is steady; others can stay at the beach or on the boat. Finish with a rowing boat or kayak into Luon Cave. Return to Bai Chay in the afternoon and rest at your hotel.
Day-by-day plan →Three unhurried days
3 days in Ha Long Bay
Drive from Hanoi in the morning and check in. After lunch and a rest, walk the Bai Chay beach and the bridge viewpoint at golden hour. Ask the hotel for vegetarian dinner options and confirm your cruise pick-up time for the next day.
