Day 1: Cruise from Bai Chay
Leave Hanoi early or stay the night before in Bai Chay, so that you reach the pier in the morning. Join a day cruise on one of the two classic routes: either Thien Cung and Dau Go caves with a floating-village stop, or Sung Sot Cave, Ti Top island and Luon Cave. Choose the first if anyone in the group finds stairs hard, since the second adds the Ti Top climb. Eat the meal on board (arrange vegetarian food in advance), return to the pier in the afternoon, and walk the Bai Chay promenade at dusk. Allow a long drive back to Hanoi, or sleep in Bai Chay and leave in the morning.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Bai Chay A few hours Easy Late afternoon and evening Dau Go Cave About 45 minutes Moderate Early in the day Sung Sot Cave About 45 to 60 minutes Moderate Early morning, before tour groups arrive Ti Top Island About 1 to 1.5 hours Demanding Clear mornings Luon Cave About 30 to 45 minutes Easy Calm mornings Pace: Ti Top Island involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Dau Go Cave: Reaching the cave means stairs and some uneven passages. Pace yourself, use the rails and stay with your group; the largest chamber is the most open and easiest part to enjoy.
With parents at Sung Sot Cave: The cave sits on a high ledge above the landing, so you climb steps to reach it and then walk a passage with uneven floors. Take your time, use handrails, and expect crowds at the mouth.

2 days in Ha Long Bay

Day 1: Caves and island by day cruise
Take the Sung Sot, Ti Top and Luon route. Visit Sung Sot Cave first for its large chambers and the view back across the bay, then climb Ti Top only if the group is steady; others can stay at the beach or on the boat. Finish with a rowing boat or kayak into Luon Cave. Return to Bai Chay in the afternoon and rest at your hotel.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Sung Sot Cave About 45 to 60 minutes Moderate Early morning, before tour groups arrive Luon Cave About 30 to 45 minutes Easy Calm mornings Bai Chay A few hours Easy Late afternoon and evening Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

Day 2: Culture and a quieter water
Hire a car and driver for the morning. Visit Cua Ong Temple in Cam Pha, about 40 km from the city, for its hill setting and view of the islands, then continue towards Bai Tu Long Bay for a quieter look at similar scenery. Alternatively, spend the morning on the Bai Chay beach and bridge and head back to Hanoi after lunch.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Cua Ong Temple About 1 to 1.5 hours Moderate Weekday mornings Bai Chay A few hours Easy Late afternoon and evening Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Cua Ong Temple: The temple stands on a hill about 100 metres above sea level with stone staircases. Take the steps slowly; there are rests along the way but few lifts.

3 days in Ha Long Bay

Day 1: Arrive and settle in Bai Chay
Drive from Hanoi in the morning and check in. After lunch and a rest, walk the Bai Chay beach and the bridge viewpoint at golden hour. Ask the hotel for vegetarian dinner options and confirm your cruise pick-up time for the next day.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Bai Chay A few hours Easy Late afternoon and evening Pace: All the stops today are easy on the legs.

Day 2: A full day on the bay
Take the Thien Cung, Dau Go and floating village route in the morning, with long, flat stretches on the water. In the afternoon, rest. If the weather is clear, add Ti Top the next morning instead of squeezing it in.

Day 3: Yen Tu or Bai Tu Long, then Hanoi
Leave early with a driver for Yen Tu Mountain in Uong Bi, on the road back toward Hanoi, and see the Buddhist complex linked to the Truc Lam Zen tradition at your pace, using the cable car where it runs. Or choose Bai Tu Long National Park for a calmer boat day. Reach Hanoi in the evening.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Yen Tu Mountain Full day Demanding Cooler, clear days Bai Tu Long National Park Full day Moderate Clear days outside the wet season Pace: Yen Tu Mountain involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Yen Tu Mountain: The pilgrimage trail climbs steeply. A cable car network exists, but the final stretch is on foot. Older travellers should plan a short route and rest often.
With parents at Bai Tu Long National Park: Mostly a boat day with short landings. Getting in and out of boats and walking on island trails can be uneven. Ask the operator about steps and facilities.

Pacing
Pacing a Ha Long Bay trip for parents and children
- Pick the shorter Thien Cung and Dau Go route if anyone finds stairs hard. The Sung Sot, Ti Top and Luon route adds a long staircase at Ti Top, which is optional.
- Tell the cruise operator about walking limits before you board. Moving between boats, tenders and rowing boats means a few steps with a moving deck underfoot.
- Pack a light layer even in warm months. The deck breeze and caves are cooler, and winter days at the bay can feel genuinely cold.
- Ask the operator what happens in bad weather. Storms and heavy rain are possible in summer and cruises can be cancelled or shortened.
- Carry travel insurance that covers medical evacuation and any prescription medicines in their original packaging, and note that care on the islands is limited.
- Plan the Hanoi drive as a half day: it is long, and starting or ending a bay trip with several hours on the road is tiring for older travellers.
