Before you go

Hardoi with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit between November and February; mornings are cool and the afternoon sun is milder.
  • Hire a car with driver, as public transport to Sandi and the small towns is limited.
  • Pace the day: Sandi in the morning, rest after lunch, Prahlad Ghat late afternoon.
  • Expect uneven ground at the lake and tomb sites, and carry water, a hat and any medication.
  • Avoid the Holi crowds at Prahlad Ghat if travelling with frail relatives.
  • Lucknow, about 110 km away, has the nearest major hospitals.

Easiest first

Places in Hardoi sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (2)

  • Prahlad Ghat (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes; longer on festival days) — A short visit with little walking, though steps and uneven ground by the water are possible. Holi brings dense crowds, so older visitors should choose a quiet day.
  • Tomb of Nawab Diler Khan and Jama Masjid, Shahabad (Places to visit · 1 hour) — Level surroundings and a short walk, but little seating or shade, and the tomb's steps may be uneven. Older visitors can view the monuments from close to the car.

Some walking — plan a break (3)

  • Bilgram Old Town and Bada Imambara (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — Streets are narrow and uneven, with little shade or seating, and religious sites involve removing shoes. Older visitors do best with a car close by and a local companion.
  • Muharram and Ashurkhana Sakina Begum (Culture and craft · 1 to 2 hours on Ashura; a short visit on other days) — Processions mean long standing, dense crowds and little seating, which is tiring for older visitors. Choose a quiet spot at the edge or visit the ashurkhana outside the procession.
  • Sandi Bird Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day; 2 to 3 hours at the lake) — The terrain is flat, but lake edges and approach paths are unpaved, shade is limited and seating or toilets cannot be assumed. Older visitors do best with a car close by and short walks.

Practical tips for Hardoi

  • Heat. April to June brings highs of about 37-39 degrees in the monthly averages. If you travel then, do outdoor stops at first light and rest through the afternoon.
  • Winter mornings. December and January lows average 9-10 degrees and fog is common on the plains, so bring a jacket and allow extra drive time.
  • Getting around. Autos and e-rickshaws cover town. Sandi, Shahabad and Bilgram need a hired car with a driver.
  • Facilities. Cafes and shops are few near Sandi lake. Carry water, snacks and a small first-aid kit.
  • Monsoon. July averages over 250 mm of rain; roads to rural sites can be muddy and the wetland is fullest.
  • Dress and worship. Dress modestly at temples, tombs and the imambara, and expect to remove shoes. Ask before photographing worshippers.
  • Money. Carry cash, including small notes, as card acceptance is uneven outside larger shops.
  • Holi at Prahlad Ghat. Holi is the biggest festival at Prahlad Ghat. It draws crowds, so go early or avoid the day if travelling with frail relatives.
