- 01
Ghangaria
Best for: Almost every visitor; it is the only practical overnight base
Good to know: Basic lodges, dormitories and gurdwara sarai at about 3,050 m, with limited heating and no real medical facilities. Book ahead in peak weeks, ask for a ground-floor room, and expect cold nights even in summer.
Sights in this area: Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib Climb, Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib, Hemkund Sarovar (Lokpal Lake)
- 02
Govindghat
Best for: The night before or after the trek, and for leaving luggage
Good to know: The roadhead on the Badrinath highway, with a gurdwara and a few hotels. Convenient for an early start, but the village is crowded in peak season and the road is prone to landslide closures.
- 03
Joshimath
Best for: Travellers who want a hotel, a hospital and a gentler first night at altitude
Good to know: A larger town about 22 km below Govindghat with the widest choice of rooms, shops and medical facilities. It adds a long drive each day, but works as an acclimatisation stop on the way up or the way back.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
