Before you go
Hemkund Sahib with elderly parents: what to know
- See a doctor before you travel. Hemkund Sahib is above 4,000 m, and the road and trail are far from hospitals. Carry regular medicines and tell your group about any heart or lung conditions.
- Do not go up on your first day at Ghangaria. Arrive, rest, drink water and let your body adjust before climbing the next morning.
- Hire a pony or palanquin for the climb if you are unsure of the 6 km ascent, and book through the registered operators at Ghangaria rather than negotiating on the trail.
- Start at first light and plan to be heading down by early afternoon. Overnight stay at the shrine is not allowed and weather turns quickly in the afternoon.
- Treat headache, nausea, dizziness or unusual breathlessness as a reason to stop and descend. Walking slowly and drinking water are the main protections.
- Carry layers, a rain poncho, sturdy shoes with good grip, a torch and warm socks. Rooms at Ghangaria are cold and mostly unheated.
Easiest first
Places in Hemkund Sahib sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (3)
- Gurdwara Langar Along the Route (Food and restaurants · 30 to 45 minutes) — Langar is served seated on mats or benches. Sitting on the floor can be hard on stiff knees, so ask volunteers for a chair or bench. The food is simple and well suited to a cold, tiring day, though you should carry your own snacks for the climb.
- Hemkund Sarovar (Lokpal Lake) (Places to visit · 30 to 60 minutes beside the water) — Once at the lake, walking is limited to the shoreline and the area around the gurdwara. The challenge is altitude and cold, so sit and rest, keep a hot drink to hand and wear gloves and a cap even if the sun is out.
- Lakshman Lokpal Mandir (Places of worship · 15 to 30 minutes) — The temple is on level ground along the lake shore, a short walk from the gurdwara. Steps are few, but the cold and altitude affect everyone. Keep your shoes handy for the walk back.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (2)
- Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib Climb (Places to visit · 3 to 5 hours up, 2 to 4 hours down) — The path is paved and well worn but steep, with a climb of about 1,100 m. Ponies and palanquins are available, and tea stalls provide rest points. Air is thin at the top. Anyone with heart, lung or blood-pressure issues should take medical advice first.
- Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib (Places of worship · 4 to 6 hours for the climb, 1 to 2 hours at the shrine, 3 to 4 hours down) — The climb is paved but steep and the air is thin. Ponies and palanquins operate on the path, and the trust says recent restoration of the prayer hall improved access for elderly and differently-abled pilgrims. Cold and altitude, not distance, are the main risks, so see a doctor beforehand and descend if symptoms start.

Practical tips for Hemkund Sahib
- Registration. Registration is compulsory through the Uttarakhand portal or at authorised centres. Carry your registration letter and photo ID, as checks take place at Rishikesh, Joshimath and Govindghat.
- Altitude. The shrine is above 4,000 m. Climb slowly, drink water, rest at tea stops and descend if headache, nausea or breathlessness persists. A study found nearly one in three pilgrims developed altitude sickness.
- Weather and layers. Mornings are cold, afternoons bring rain or fog, and temperatures can fall sharply. Carry thermals, a fleece, gloves, a cap, a waterproof jacket or poncho and spare socks.
- Timing. Start at first light and plan to be heading down by early afternoon. Overnight stay at the shrine is not allowed, and the weather turns quickly later in the day.
- Dress and etiquette. As at any gurdwara, cover your head, remove shoes and keep silence in the prayer hall. Do not bring tobacco, alcohol or meat to the shrine. Follow volunteers' instructions on photography.
- Cash and connectivity. Mobile networks are patchy and card payment is unreliable above Govindghat. Carry enough cash in small notes for ponies, tea, lodges and donations.
- Luggage. Travel light. Leave heavy bags in Govindghat or your hotel and carry only essentials up to Ghangaria, as luggage is moved by mule at a price.
- Road delays. The Badrinath highway is subject to landslides, especially in the monsoon. Build a spare day into your plans and check road advisories before you set off each morning.
