Plan 01

1 day in Hue

  1. 01

Day 1: Imperial City and the river

Start at opening at the Imperial City, walking from the Meridian Gate to the Thai Hoa Palace and the Forbidden Purple City ruins. Have a vegetarian lunch and rest at midday. In the late afternoon walk across Truong Tien Bridge or take a short Perfume River boat ride, and finish at the riverside as the lights come on.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Imperial City (Hue Citadel)3 to 4 hoursModerateEarly morning, just after opening
Truong Tien Bridge20 to 40 minutesEasyLate afternoon to evening

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Imperial City (Hue Citadel): Distances are long and mostly open to the sun, with uneven stone and gravel in places and some steps at halls. Carry water and a hat, use the covered corridors and benches to rest, and consider a shorter route covering the gate, throne hall and a few courtyards.

Day 1: Imperial City and Dong Ba

See the Imperial City in the morning, rest at midday, then visit Dieu De Pagoda and Dong Ba Market in the late afternoon and walk to Truong Tien Bridge at dusk.

With parents at Dong Ba Market: Narrow, crowded aisles with uneven floors and wet patches near the fish and produce stalls. Go slowly, avoid the busiest hour and keep valuables secure.

Day 2: Tombs and Thien Mu

Go early to the Tomb of Tu Duc, then the Tomb of Khai Dinh if you can manage the stairs. Return by the river or road via Thien Mu Pagoda and have a quiet vegetarian dinner.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Tomb of Tu Duc1.5 to 2 hoursEasyEarly morning
Tomb of Khai Dinh1 to 1.5 hoursDemandingEarly morning
Thien Mu Pagoda1 to 1.5 hoursModerateEarly morning or late afternoon

Pace: Tomb of Khai Dinh involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Tomb of Khai Dinh: The tomb is built up a hillside, with long flights of steps between terraces and few places to sit until the top. It is hard for anyone with knee or heart problems; the interior at the top is cooler.

With parents at Thien Mu Pagoda: The approach is level but the grounds have steps and slopes, and shade is patchy. Take it slowly; there are benches and the river view makes a natural resting point.

Day 3: Market, food and a day trip

Visit Dong Ba Market and Dieu De Pagoda in the morning, eat at a vegetarian restaurant, and if you are fit spend the day at Bach Ma National Park or head onward over the Hai Van Pass.

With parents at Bach Ma National Park: Trails can be steep, wet and slippery, and the mountain climate is cooler and wetter than in Hue. Not suited to anyone with knee, heart or balance problems; carry rain gear and ask the park about open routes.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Hue trip for parents and children

  • Do the Imperial City between about 6.30 and 10 am, then rest. The courtyards are open to the sun and the heat builds quickly from April to September.
  • Khai Dinh's tomb has long staircases and few resting places. If knees or heart are a concern, choose Tu Duc's tomb, where paths are gentler.
  • Take the river route to Thien Mu Pagoda and the tombs if you can: boats are seated and shaded, and they save the walk and the road.
  • Dress modestly at pagodas, with shoulders and knees covered, and carry a light layer for air-conditioned rooms and rainy days.
  • Travel insurance with medical cover matters. Ask your hotel for the nearest clinic or hospital, and carry a list of regular medicines in English.
  • Avoid the rainy season, roughly September to December, when floods and heavy rain can close roads, tombs and boat trips.
