Landmarks in Hue

  1. 01

    Tomb of Khai Dinh

The last big imperial tomb, built 1920 to 1931 on a hillside south of the city. Its concrete halls are covered in glass and porcelain mosaic, and the style mixes Vietnamese and European ideas.

    1 to 1.5 hours
    Walking

    Best time
    Early morning
    Tickets
Wikivoyage lists a separate tomb ticket, and combined tickets that include the Imperial City. Prices change, so confirm at the gate. Tomb sites open from early morning to late afternoon, with tour groups arriving around mid-morning.

  2. 02

    Tomb of Tu Duc

A landscaped tomb complex built 1864 to 1867 for Emperor Tu Duc, with a lake, pavilions and temple buildings. It works as a retreat as much as a monument and is gentler on the legs than Khai Dinh's tomb.

    Time needed
    1.5 to 2 hours
    Walking
    Easy
    Best time
    Early morning
    Tickets
Wikivoyage lists a separate tomb ticket and combined tickets with the Imperial City. A 2023 source cited by Wikipedia gives 150,000 dong, but prices change; confirm at the gate. Early arrival avoids tour groups.

  3. 03

    Truong Tien Bridge

A six-arch steel bridge over the Perfume River, opened in 1900 and lit with colour changes at night. It is a short, free stop and the easiest way to cross between the citadel side and the south bank.

    Time needed
    20 to 40 minutes
    Walking

    Best time
    Late afternoon to evening
    Tickets
No ticket; open to foot and vehicle traffic. Lighting runs in the evening, and the city centre is busy then, so expect crowds near the riverside.

Experiences in Hue

    Perfume River Cruise

A slow ride on the Perfume River in a dragon boat or small tourist boat, often combined with Thien Mu Pagoda and the royal tombs upstream. It is a restful way to see Hue and to avoid road traffic.

    Time needed
    2 to 4 hours
    Walking
    Easy
    Best time
Morning for light and cooler air
    Tickets
Prices, stops and operating hours vary by operator and season, and the river can be unsafe during floods. Agree the route, stops, return time and total price before boarding.
