Area by area

Idukki neighbourhoods compared

  1. 01

    Cheruthoni and Painavu

Best for: Dam, Hill View Park and the sanctuary

Good to know: The closest base for the dams and boat landing. Choices are basic and limited, so book ahead in the October to February season and check that the road to the property is easy for older travellers.

Sights in this area: Idukki Arch Dam

  2. 02

    Kattappana

Best for: A larger town with more choice, and Ramakkalmedu and Kalvari Mount

Good to know: More shops, restaurants and stays, and a good base if you also want Ramakkalmedu. Expect traffic in the town centre and a drive of some distance to the dams.

Sights in this area: Kalvari Mount, Ramakkalmedu

  3. 03

    Thodupuzha

Best for: Arrivals from Kochi and Thommankuthu

Good to know: The gateway town on the way in from Kochi and Kottayam, with a wider range of hotels. It suits a first night or a stop for Thommankuthu, but is a long drive from the dam.

Sights in this area: Thommankuthu Waterfalls

  4. 04

    Munnar or Thekkady (separate guides)

Best for: Longer Kerala hill trips

Good to know: Both lie elsewhere in the district and are covered in their own Raahzo guides. They are better bases for tea country and Periyar than for the dam area.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
