Cheruthoni Dam
A 138-metre concrete gravity dam about a kilometre west of the Idukki arch, with the floodgates that control the reservoir. It is the practical entry point for dam visits and a landmark of the 2018 floods.
- Time needed
- 45 minutes to 1.5 hours, usually combined with Idukki Arch Dam
- Walking
- Easy
- Best time
- Morning when the dam is open to visitors; the monsoon fills the reservoir but increases closures
- Tickets
- When the state opens the dams, Cheruthoni is where most visitors enter, and a ticket counter near the entry gate sells slots left over from online booking. Dates are announced seasonally (1 September to 30 November in 2025), so check the current notice and the Kerala hydel tourism site before driving out.
- 02
Idukki Arch Dam
A thin concrete arch dam, about 169 metres high, wedged into a narrow gorge of the Periyar between the Kuravan and Kurathi hills. Public access is seasonal, so the first job is checking whether the gates are open.
- Time needed
- 1.5 to 2.5 hours including queues and the walk
- Walking
- Easy
- Best time
- Morning on a day when the dam is open; for access, the post-monsoon months (September to November in 2025) were used; otherwise view it from Hill View Park
- Tickets
- Visits are not permanent. Access to Idukki and Cheruthoni dams was opened for 1 September to 30 November in 2025, with Wednesdays closed for inspection and closures possible in heavy-rain alerts; passes were bookable online through the Kerala hydel tourism site. No 2026 notice was found, so check before you travel. Expect security checks and rules on cameras and phones; confirm what is allowed.

- Walking

Ramakkalmedu
A windy hilltop in the eastern part of Idukki district with the Kuravan and Kurathi statue and long views over Tamil Nadu. It sits well to the east of the dams, so treat it as a separate outing.
- Time needed
- 1.5 to 2.5 hours on site
- Walking
- Moderate
- Best time
- Late afternoon for light and wind; dusk is said to show the lights of Tamil Nadu towns
- Tickets
