Before you go

Imphal with elderly parents: what to know

  • Imphal's valley floor is flat, so the city is easier on knees than hill towns, but allow for short taxi rides rather than long walks between sights.
  • Kangla Fort has a large area with paths that are mostly level; visit in the morning and carry water, as there is little shade in parts.
  • Loktak and Keibul Lamjao involve a long road journey and small boats. Choose calm weather, wear a life jacket and ask for a boat with seating and a canopy.
  • Winter mornings and evenings are cold at this altitude; bring layers even though midday is mild.
  • Carry regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit; hospital care is concentrated in Imphal, so plan remote days with that in mind.
  • Confirm current advisories, ILP requirements and any restrictions on movement before you travel, and keep copies of your documents and permit.

Easiest first

Places in Imphal sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (8)

  • INA Memorial, Moirang (Culture and craft · 30-45 minutes) — Mostly level with limited shade. Confirm access, seating and parking with your driver.
  • Imphal Peace Museum (Culture and craft · About 1 hour) — Mostly level with some walking on site. Confirm current access and seating with the museum, and carry water.
  • Imphal Polo Ground (Mapal Kangjeibung) (Sports · 20-30 minutes; longer for a match) — Level ground with limited seating on non-match days. Ask about stands and shade for fixtures and carry water.
  • Imphal War Cemetery (Places to visit · 45-60 minutes) — Mostly level lawns and paths, with limited shade. Benches may be available; carry water and go in the morning.
  • Manipur State Museum (Culture and craft · 1-1.5 hours) — Mostly indoor and level, with seating in places. Ask staff about access to upper floors and lifts before you go.
  • Manipuri Eromba and Singju (Food and restaurants · 45-60 minutes for a meal) — Dining is level and seated in most places. Chilli heat can be intense; ask for mild dishes and drink bottled or filtered water.
  • Shree Govindajee Temple (Places of worship · 45-60 minutes) — The temple has a paved court and a raised congregation hall with a few steps. Ask staff about seating and accessibility, and expect crowds on festival days.
  • Vishnu Temple, Bishnupur (Places of worship · 20-30 minutes) — Mostly level with a short walk from the road. Confirm access with your driver; there may be limited seating.

Some walking — plan a break (4)

  • Ima Keithel (Shopping · 1-2 hours) — The market is crowded with narrow aisles, uneven floors and little seating. Go slowly with a companion, avoid peak hours if possible, and plan a rest afterwards.
  • Kangla Fort (Places to visit · About 2 hours) — Paths are mostly level but long, with little shade in places. Bring water and a hat, rest on benches where available and ask at the gate whether a vehicle can take you part of the way inside.
  • Keibul Lamjao National Park (Places to visit · 2-3 hours on site; full day with travel) — Access involves a long drive and possibly a boat or walk on soft ground. Ask about tower access, seating and the condition of paths in advance.
  • Loktak Lake and Sendra (Places to visit · Full day including travel) — Roads are long, and boats are small and can be unsteady. Wear a life jacket, ask for a boat with a canopy and seating, and avoid the monsoon. Viewpoints are easier than boat rides.

Practical tips for Imphal

  • Permits and advisories. Check current travel advisories from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Government of Manipur before booking. Indian visitors from outside the state have needed an Inner Line Permit; verify current status and apply through the official portal.
  • Climate and layers. At about 786 metres, winter mornings can be cold (January lows average around 5 degrees C) while midday is mild. Pack layers, and a light rain jacket for any month from March to October.
  • Monsoon. June to August is the wettest period, with monthly rain above 190 mm. Roads outside the valley can be slow and boat trips on Loktak less pleasant, so avoid those months if you can.
  • Getting around. Hire a car and driver for Loktak, Moirang and Bishnupur. Within the city, local taxis and autos are easy for short hops; agree the fare in advance.
  • Dress and etiquette. Dress modestly at temples; Shree Govindajee has a traditional dress expectation, so check on arrival. Remove shoes where asked and ask before photographing people at Ima Keithel.
  • Money and connectivity. Carry cash in small notes for markets and boat rides, as card acceptance is patchy outside hotels. Mobile connectivity can be unreliable; download maps and keep key numbers offline.
  • Food and water. Fermented fish and chilli feature in many dishes. Tell restaurants about vegetarian needs and spice limits, and drink bottled or filtered water.
  • Photography. Photography rules differ at museums, memorials and the cemetery. Look for signs, ask staff, and be respectful of worshippers and vendors.
