Day 1: Fort, museum and gompa
Begin at Ita Fort on a weekday morning, checking first that it is open. Drive to the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum and spend about ninety minutes with the community displays. Climb to the Gompa just above it for the stupa and the view. After lunch, visit the Craft Centre and Emporium if it is open, then end with a gentle walk in Indira Gandhi Park.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Gompa (Centre for Buddhist Culture) 45–75 minutes Moderate Morning or late afternoon on a clear day Ita Fort 45–90 minutes Moderate Weekday mornings in the dry months, roughly November to February Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum 1–1.5 hours Easy Any time; useful as an indoor stop on hot or wet days Craft Centre and Emporium 45–60 minutes Easy Weekday daytime; avoid holidays Indira Gandhi Park 45–60 minutes Easy Late afternoon in the dry months Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Gompa (Centre for Buddhist Culture): A road spirals up the hill, so you can drive most of the way, but there are still steps and short slopes around the stupa and main hall. Sit in the courtyard to rest; there is little formal seating and no lift.
With parents at Ita Fort: The grounds are landscaped, but the fort sits on rising ground and the walls, gateways and paths involve some uneven brick and stone. Take a car to the nearest gate, walk slowly, and expect limited shade and few places to sit.

Day 1: Heritage and culture

Day 2: Forest and wildlife
Drive to Ganga Lake early for a quiet walk and a boat ride if running, then explore a little of the sanctuary edge. After lunch, visit the Itanagar Zoological Park at Chimpu if it is open. Finish at Indira Gandhi Park for an easy, flat evening.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Ganga Lake (Gyakar Sinyi) 2–3 hours Moderate Dry months, roughly October to March; weekday mornings Itanagar Zoological Park 2–3 hours Moderate Cooler, dry months, in the morning Indira Gandhi Park 45–60 minutes Easy Late afternoon in the dry months Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Ganga Lake (Gyakar Sinyi): Reaching the lake is easy by car, and the shoreline can be enjoyed from a bench. Paths around the water and any steps down to boats can be uneven and slippery in wet weather, so take it slowly and wear shoes with grip.
With parents at Itanagar Zoological Park: The park is hilly and large, so walking can be tiring in heat or rain. Take a steady pace, use any internal transport that is offered, and expect limited shade at some enclosures; ask at the gate about vehicle access.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Itanagar trip for parents and children
- Hire a car and driver for the whole stay; the city is hilly and sights are spread out.
- Pair sights with a rest: the museum is indoors and level, so use it in the hottest or wettest hours.
- Avoid the monsoon from May to September if possible; slippery paths and landslides affect roads.
- At the Gompa and Ita Fort, ask the driver to wait; both involve steps or uneven ground.
- Carry your eILP, ID and any medicines in hand luggage, and know where the nearest hospital is.
- Confirm opening days; several sights are reported closed on weekends or specific weekdays.
