The short answer
Jampui Hills Trek: what visitors should know first
Go for a gentle-to-moderate hill walk in cool air with big views, rather than a wilderness expedition. Plan a day from Vanghmun with a local guide, in October to February. The full walk is too long for most older travellers, who can drive to viewpoints instead.
History and context
The story behind Jampui Hills Trek
The Jampui ridge has long been settled by Mizo villagers, and village paths link the settlements along its crest. Tripura Tourism now promotes its trekking routes and the watchtower on Betlingchhip, the state's highest peak.

Why it matters
Why Jampui Hills Trek is worth your time
Jampui is Tripura's only hill station and its highest ground, and walking the ridge is the best way to understand it. Unlike the plains below, the crest is cool, green and lived in, with clean villages, churches and gardens that show how Mizo communities have shaped the hills.
The walk also brings the region's geography into view. From the top you see three countries' worth of hills at once: Tripura's own ranges, Mizoram to the east and the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh to the south-west. For travellers who come to the north-east for quiet rather than crowds, this ridge walk is one of the gentlest rewarding treks in the region.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Base yourself at Vanghmun, the main village on the ridge, and set out early with a local guide. The route follows the crest of the Jampui Hills, linking village roads and footpaths through Mizo settlements, betel nut and orange gardens and patches of forest, towards Betlingchhip (also called Thaidawr), at about 930 m (3,050 ft) the highest peak in Tripura. Tripura Tourism gives a higher figure of about 3,200 ft. A watchtower on the summit looks across the Kanchanpur-Dasda valley, other ranges of Tripura, the hills of Mizoram and the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
The distance and exact path depend on where you start and which villages you pass, so agree the plan with your guide and arrange a car to collect you at the end. Shorter sections, such as a morning walk out of Vanghmun to a sunrise viewpoint, suit those who want a taste of the ridge without a full day.
The best months are October to February, when skies are clearer and the air is cool. From September to December you may walk above a sea of cloud in the early morning. Carry water, a light jacket and snacks, as shops are few between villages.
