Why it matters

Why Jampui Sunrise and Sunset Viewpoints is worth your time

Sunrise and sunset are what Jampui is known for. Tripura Tourism singles out the views from the ridge at dawn and dusk as the main reason to visit, and the cloud seas that form between September and December are rare in a state that is otherwise mostly low-lying.

They are also the most inclusive experience in the hills. Grandparents and grandchildren can share the same view without any hard walking, which makes the viewpoints the centre of a family trip to Jampui.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Ask at Eden Tourist Lodge or your homestay the evening before which viewpoint to use, as the best spot changes with the season and the direction of the sun. Leave about half an hour before sunrise with a torch and a warm layer, and be in place as the sky starts to lighten.

From September to December, clouds often form at the foot of the hills and rise slowly to wrap the ridges, so on a good morning you look out over a sea of white with hilltops breaking through. Later in the day the views open up across the Kanchanpur-Dasda valley, other ranges of Tripura and the hills of Mizoram, and towards the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Sunset is gentler and warmer, and a good time for older family members who prefer not to rise early. Stay until the light fades, then return carefully, as roads have little lighting.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Ask your host the night before which viewpoint to use
  • Carry a torch and warm layer for sunrise
  • Bring something to sit on
  • Return carefully after dark on unlit roads
