Jhalawar is one of Rajasthan's least visited district towns, and that is part of its appeal. It lies in the south-east of the state, in the Hadoti region at the edge of the Malwa plateau, and was the capital of a small princely state ruled by the Jhala family until 1947. The town has a palace, a museum, tree-lined civil lines and the unhurried feel of a place that does not live on tourists.
The main reason to come is Gagron Fort, a few kilometres north, where the Ahu and Kali Sindh rivers meet and a hill fort rises out of the water. It is one of six forts that UNESCO inscribed as the Hill Forts of Rajasthan in 2013, and it is far quieter than Amber or Chittorgarh. In town, Garh Palace and the Government Museum, started in 1915, give an hour or two of indoor interest.
A short drive away in Jhalrapatan, the old walled town of temples, the Sun Temple and the ruined Chandrabhaga group show earlier centuries of building. Farther afield, the Buddhist caves at Kolvi make a long, rough day out for the dedicated.
Jhalawar suits slow travellers: one or two days is enough, ideally between October and March. Facilities are limited, so plan transport, meals and a base in advance, and treat it as an add-on to Kota rather than a standalone trip.
