Day 1: Gagron and the old town
Start in the morning at Gagron Fort, hiring a taxi or auto from town and agreeing a waiting time. Spend two to three hours walking the gateways and ramparts and see the Mitthe Shah shrine outside. Return for lunch and a rest, then visit Garh Palace and the Government Museum in the late afternoon. Finish with a walk through Bada Bazar.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Gagron Fort 2–3 hours including the drive from Jhalawar Moderate October to March; the river-side views are best just after the monsoon, but check that the approach is open Garh Palace About 1 hour with the museum next door Easy Morning in October to March, when the courtyards are cool Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Gagron Fort: The approach is by road and the fort is spread over uneven stone ground with ramps, steps and gateways. There is little shade or seating in the open courtyards, so older visitors should go early, wear sturdy shoes and be ready to see only the lower gateways and ramparts.

Day 3: Kolvi Caves
Leave early for the Kolvi Buddhist caves, about two hours each way. Carry water, expect a rough site, and return by evening, or continue to Kota or Bhawani Mandi.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Kolvi Caves Full day including the drive Demanding October to March; avoid the monsoon when roads and paths turn muddy Pace: Kolvi Caves involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Kolvi Caves: Not easy for those with limited mobility: the caves are on a hillside with uneven laterite rock, steps and little shade or railing. Older travellers may prefer to see only the lower caves or skip the visit.

Pacing
Pacing a Jhalawar trip for parents and children
- Plan one outing a day. Gagron in the morning and the museum in the afternoon is a comfortable rhythm.
- Hire a car and driver from Kota or a local taxi for the day so that you have somewhere cool to rest between sights.
- Gagron Fort has uneven ground and little shade, so go early, wear sturdy shoes and be ready to see only the lower gateways.
- Skip Kolvi unless you are comfortable with a long drive and rough, exposed terrain.
- Choose a heritage stay or a hotel with a restaurant, since dinner options in town are limited.
- Carry water, a hat and any medicines, as there are few facilities near the sights.
