How to reach Jorhat by air

Jorhat Airport (JRH), at Rowriah, is about 7 km from the town centre and roughly 20 minutes by road. IndiGo has flown from here to Kolkata and Delhi; check which routes currently operate. Dibrugarh (DIB) is the next major airport, about 3 hours away by road.

How to reach Jorhat by train

Jorhat Town (JTTN) is on the Furkating-Jorhat-Mariani branch line. Mariani Junction (MXN), about 17 km away, is the district's major junction and is often the more useful railhead for long-distance trains. Check which services stop where before booking.

How to reach Jorhat by road

Jorhat sits on the old Assam Trunk Road (NH37), about 55 km west of Sivasagar and some 96 km from Kaziranga. Guwahati is a long road day, around six hours. Buses and shared cars serve the main towns, but a private car is easier.

Getting around Jorhat

A hired car with driver is the easiest way to see sights 8 to 20 km out. Autos and e-rickshaws work in town. Hotels can arrange taxis and often book Majuli ferry tickets. Agree fares before you set off.

Easy transfers to and in Jorhat

  • Plan for November to February if you can. Summer humidity and the monsoon make long drives and temple visits tiring.
  • Use a car and driver for sights that lie 8 to 20 km from town. Roads are flat but can be slow, and autos offer little shade or comfort on longer runs.
  • Remove shoes at namghars and temples. Carry socks for hot or cold floors, and a folding stool if you cannot sit cross-legged for long.
  • Carry regular medicines and a basic kit. Jorhat has hospitals, but rural stops such as the sanctuary and Majuli have little medical cover.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
