Before you go
Jorhat with elderly parents: what to know
- Plan for November to February if you can. Summer humidity and the monsoon make long drives and temple visits tiring.
- Use a car and driver for sights that lie 8 to 20 km from town. Roads are flat but can be slow, and autos offer little shade or comfort on longer runs.
- Remove shoes at namghars and temples. Carry socks for hot or cold floors, and a folding stool if you cannot sit cross-legged for long.
- Hoollongapar and the maidam have uneven paths and limited seating. Take water, wear closed shoes and ask staff what is realistic for your mobility.
- Carry regular medicines and a basic kit. Jorhat has hospitals, but rural stops such as the sanctuary and Majuli have little medical cover.
- Book a ground-floor room or one with a lift, and check that the bathroom has grab rails or a non-slip floor.
Easiest first
Places in Jorhat sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (6)
- Assamese thali and jolpan (Food and restaurants · 1 hour for a meal) — Seated meals in ordinary restaurants. Ask about spice levels and avoid very oily fried items if your stomach is sensitive; check restrooms and steps.
- Burhi Gosani Devalaya (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — A short walk from the road and mostly level, but steps and queues at festival times. Choose a weekday morning; seating is limited.
- Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar (Places of worship · 45 to 90 minutes) — Level ground and a spacious campus. You sit on the floor in the prayer hall, so ask for a bench or stool if cross-legged sitting is hard, and expect crowds at festivals.
- Lachit Borphukan Maidam (Places to visit · 45 to 60 minutes) — A short, mostly level walk on the grounds, with limited seating and little shade. A morning visit is more comfortable.
- Sukapha Samannay Kshetra (Culture and craft · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Gardens and paved walkways with a museum building. Mostly level, but check shade and seating, and avoid midday sun.
- Tocklai Tea Research Institute (Places to visit · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Mostly level paths and indoor exhibits, with shade from old trees. Distances between the museum and factory are short, and a driver can usually park close.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — Forest paths can be uneven, damp or muddy and there is little seating. Older travellers should keep to the shorter, flatter routes and move slowly.

Practical tips for Jorhat
- Rain. Jorhat averages close to 1,920 mm of rain a year, mostly between April and September. Pack a light rain jacket and a flexible plan if you travel outside November to March.
- Getting around. A hired car with driver covers sights 8 to 20 km from town in a morning. Hotels can usually arrange one. Autos and e-rickshaws work for town trips; agree fares before you set off.
- Majuli ferry. Ferries to Majuli leave from Nimati Ghat, about an hour's crossing. Schedules change with water levels and season, so confirm timings with your hotel and aim to cross in daylight.
- Temple etiquette. Take off shoes at namghars and temples, cover shoulders and knees, and check photography rules at the gate. Prayer halls may be crowded during festivals.
- Tea shopping. Buy sealed packs and ask for the estate name and flush. Tocklai sells tea to visitors, and local grocers stock many Assam teas at fair prices.
- Cash and connectivity. Cards work in hotels and larger shops, but smaller eateries and rural sites often want cash or UPI. Mobile signal can weaken near the sanctuary and on the river.
- Kaziranga timing. The park is generally open from about November to April. If you plan to combine it with Jorhat, check current gate and safari booking rules well ahead.
- Closures. Confirm opening hours before long drives. Government museums and memorials may close on holidays, and some sites have different timings listed by different sources.
