Day 1: Tea, namghar and the town's own history
Start at Tocklai Tea Research Institute when it opens, for the museum and model factory, and call ahead to confirm tours. Drive east to Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar for the lamp and a quiet half hour in the prayer hall. After lunch and a rest, visit Burhi Gosani Devalaya on Dewal Road, then finish at Sukapha Samannay Kshetra if time and light allow. Skip anything on the list that feels rushed; each of these is better done slowly.

Day 2: Forest and memorials
Leave early for Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, when the forest is quietest and the hoolock gibbons are most likely to be heard. Continue to the Lachit Borphukan Maidam, which is a short drive from the sanctuary. Return for a late lunch, then spend the evening at Sukapha Samannay Kshetra or simply resting.

With parents at Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary: Forest paths can be uneven, damp or muddy and there is little seating. Older travellers should keep to the shorter, flatter routes and move slowly.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Jorhat trip for parents and children
- Plan for November to February if you can. Summer humidity and the monsoon make long drives and temple visits tiring.
- Use a car and driver for sights that lie 8 to 20 km from town. Roads are flat but can be slow, and autos offer little shade or comfort on longer runs.
- Remove shoes at namghars and temples. Carry socks for hot or cold floors, and a folding stool if you cannot sit cross-legged for long.
- Hoollongapar and the maidam have uneven paths and limited seating. Take water, wear closed shoes and ask staff what is realistic for your mobility.
- Carry regular medicines and a basic kit. Jorhat has hospitals, but rural stops such as the sanctuary and Majuli have little medical cover.
- Book a ground-floor room or one with a lift, and check that the bathroom has grab rails or a non-slip floor.
