Before you go

Kakinada with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan one outing a day and rest after lunch; heat and humidity build quickly.
  • Go to Coringa in the morning and carry water, a hat and repellent; there is little shade on the walk to the creek.
  • Hire a car with a driver for the temple circuit; public transport to Samalkot and Gollala Mamidada is limited.
  • Check weather before travelling from October to December, as cyclones can close roads and cancel boat rides.
  • Temples need modest dress and bare feet on hot stone; carry socks.

Easiest first

Places in Kakinada sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (6)

  • Bhavanarayana Swamy Temple, Sarpavaram (Places of worship · About 1 hour) — The approach is level and the main spaces are at ground level, with stone floors that get hot by mid-morning. Seating is limited. Queues on festival days can be long and slow, so choose an ordinary weekday if standing is hard.
  • Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · Half a day; add more if you want to wait for birds at low tide) — The route to the creek pier is a flat walk because vehicles are not allowed in the visitor area. Boat boarding involves a step down and a narrow jetty, which can be awkward with a stick. Shade is patchy, humidity is high and there are few places to sit, so carry water and go early.
  • Kakinada Beach (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The coast road is level and the breeze helps, but shade is scarce and seating is informal. Do not wade into the sea; currents and surf can be strong.
  • Kotaiah Sweets (Kakinada Kaja) (Food and restaurants · 30 minutes) — A simple counter-service shop with no stairs at most outlets. Sweets are sugary, so diabetic travellers should share a piece and skip the syrup.
  • Suryanarayana Swamy Temple, Gollala Mamidada (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Grounds are level and the setting is green, but there is a fair amount of walking between shrines and open sun. Queues on busy days can be long, so choose a weekday morning.
  • Uppada Jamdani Weaving (Shopping · Half a day) — Weavers' houses are small, and some have steps and low doorways. Roads in the village can be narrow. Sit while the weaver explains the loom, and carry water.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Chalukya Kumararama Bhimeswara Temple, Samalkot (Places of worship · 1 to 1.5 hours) — The linga darshan is on an upper level, so there are steps, and the stone floors get hot. There is a sacred tank visible from the temple for a rest. Elders who cannot climb may want to take a companion's arm or check at the temple for any easier route.

Practical tips for Kakinada

  • Heat and humidity. April to June is very hot and humid; carry water and plan outings for mornings.
  • Cyclone season. October to December can bring heavy rain; check forecasts and have flexible plans.
  • Getting around. Autos and app cabs work in town; hire a car for Coringa, Samalkot and Gollala Mamidada.
  • Sanctuary visits. Confirm opening days, fees and boat availability with the forest office; boat trips depend on tide and weather.
  • Temple etiquette. Dress modestly, remove footwear and carry socks for hot stone floors.
  • Money. Carry cash for small shops, weavers and temple donations; cards are accepted in hotels.
  • Mosquitoes. Use repellent near the mangroves and in the evening.
