The short answer
Tehri Dam: what visitors should know first
Worth it only if you are already heading to Tehri Lake and like big engineering. Expect a roadside view of the wall and reservoir, not a guided tour. Allow a full day with the lake, and check whether visitor viewing is open that day.
History and context
The story behind Tehri Dam
Tehri Dam rises 260.5 m on the Bhagirathi River at New Tehri in Tehri Garhwal district and is the tallest dam in India. Work began in 1978 and it was completed in 2006. It is part of the Tehri hydropower complex, with the Koteshwar Dam downstream forming the lower reservoir for the pumped-storage plant.
The project involved relocating more than 100,000 people, which led to long legal battles and delayed completion.

Why it matters
Why Tehri Dam is worth your time
The dam is one of the most consequential projects in the Garhwal Himalaya. Construction began in 1978 and it was completed in 2006, after long legal and social battles over relocating more than 100,000 people. Old Tehri town was lost to the reservoir, and New Tehri was built to replace it.
For a visitor it explains the landscape you will see everywhere on this side of the hills: the pale reservoir arms, the new bridges, the changed roads. Standing above it also puts the trade-offs of hydropower, and what the hills gave up for it, in plain view. It is a sober sight, not a festive one, and best taken as context for a lake day.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat Tehri Dam as a stop on a lake day, not a destination on its own. Drive to New Tehri, find the public viewing points above the reservoir and take in the scale of the wall, which is a rock and earth-fill embankment across the Bhagirathi. Five or ten minutes of looking is enough to grasp it; the context matters more than the structure.
New Tehri is a planned town built for people displaced by the project, and it is a useful lunch and rest stop with ordinary restaurants and shops. From here the lake is a short further drive, and the combination fills a day without hard walking.
Photograph only where it is permitted, follow any security staff instructions, and do not fly a drone. If the weather is hazy, postpone it: views over the reservoir are the point of the stop.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Confirm viewing access and photography rules locally
- Do not fly drones near the dam
- Combine with Tehri Lake to justify the drive
- Start early to avoid driving winding roads after dark
