Kanatal is a small hamlet on the Chamba-Mussoorie road in Tehri Garhwal, at around 2,500 m. Its name is said to mean dry lake, after a water body that disappeared long ago. There is no bazaar, no ghat and no big monument here. What it offers is oak and rhododendron forest, cool air and a view over folded Garhwal hills.
The village works best as a base of two or three days. Walk or drive into Kaudia Forest in the morning, rest after lunch, and add a day out to Tehri Lake and New Tehri if you want something with more movement. The nearby town of Chamba is the practical gateway for supplies, and Mussoorie and Dhanaulti are the closest other hill stations.
It rewards travellers who value quiet. Hotels, cottages, camps and homestays are small and scattered, and most are reached by narrow roads. In winter heavy snowfall can block roads and temperatures can fall below freezing, so older travellers should check conditions and keep a margin in the plan.
A note on altitude: sources quote anything between about 2,400 and 2,600 m. Either way, expect thinner air than in Mussoorie, and give yourself a gentle first day.
