Before you go
Kanatal with elderly parents: what to know
- Spend the first day resting; at about 2,500 m even short walks can feel tiring.
- Book a hotel that has a driveway to the door, since many stays sit on steep, narrow lanes.
- Winter brings snow and road closures. Travel only with a driver used to ice and check conditions the day before.
- Carry regular medicines and a small first-aid kit; medical facilities in the village are basic.
- Do not take Surkanda Devi's steep climb unless you are confident; consider seeing it from below or skipping it.
- Plan lake days in daylight and avoid driving winding roads after dark.
Easiest first
Places in Kanatal sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (4)
- Chamba and the Gabbar Singh Negi fair (Culture and craft · 30-90 minutes as a stop; half a day for the fair) — Mostly level pavement along the main road with plenty of shops and tea stalls to sit at. The fair is crowded, so choose quieter hours and keep pace slow.
- Dobra-Chanti Bridge (Places to visit · 20-30 minutes at the bridge; add substantial driving time) — You can see it from the car or a short level stretch near the approach. The long drive is the main strain, so skip it if the day is already full or if winding roads make you unwell.
- Tehri Dam (Places to visit · 30-60 minutes for the viewpoint; a full day including the drive and Tehri Lake) — Viewpoints are mostly reached by vehicle with short, level walks, so it is easy for most older visitors. The main strain is the long, winding road to get here and back.
- Tehri Lake (Places to visit · Half a day to a full day including the drive) — A boat ride needs only a short walk to the jetty and a step aboard, with life jackets provided by operators. Hill roads are long and winding, so travel sickness is the main issue for some.
Some walking — plan a break (1)
- Kaudia Forest (Places to visit · 1.5-3 hours for a walk; half a day with a jeep drive) — Trails are forest paths with roots, loose stones and gentle slopes, and there is little seating. At about 2,500 m the air is thin enough to tire some older visitors, so go slowly. A jeep can cover the longer track.

Practical tips for Kanatal
- Altitude. Around 2,500 m the air is thinner than in Mussoorie. Rest on arrival, drink water and go slowly on stairs.
- Winter snow. Heavy snowfall can block roads from December to February. Check conditions and keep spare days.
- Getting around. Hire a car and driver. Few direct buses run and cabs are unreliable on the ridge.
- Money. Carry cash. ATMs and card terminals are limited, and Chamba is the nearest larger town.
- Dress. Pack layers, a windproof jacket and sun protection in all seasons. Nights are cold even in summer.
- Monsoon. July and August bring landslides and slow roads. Avoid unless you are flexible.
- Wildlife. Leopards and bears are reported in the forest. Avoid walking alone at dawn or dusk.
- Photography. Ask before photographing people and follow rules near the dam, where restrictions apply.
