The short answer

Tehri Lake: what visitors should know first

Good for a relaxed day out if you like water and views. Take a boat ride at a calm hour, skip the more adventurous activities if mobility is limited, and check operators and prices on the day. Go with a driver; the roads are winding.

History and context

The story behind Tehri Lake

The lake exists because of Tehri Dam, completed in 2006 on the Bhagirathi River. Its reservoir covers roughly 42-52 sq km depending on the source, and flooding it meant relocating more than 100,000 people and building New Tehri.

Why it matters

Why Tehri Lake is worth your time

Tehri Lake is the reservoir created by Tehri Dam on the Bhagirathi River, and it changed the geography of this part of Garhwal. Where there were river valleys and the old town of Tehri there is now a long sheet of water, which has also made tourism possible in places that were once remote.

For a trip based at Kanatal, it supplies what the ridge does not: open water, a sense of space and an easy activity for mixed-ability groups. It is also a reminder that this landscape is a working one, shaped by hydropower and resettlement. It suits a calm half day better than a rushed checklist.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    A slow boat ride

The easiest way to see the size of the reservoir and the hills around it.

  2. 02

    Lakeside tea stop

Stalls near the water offer simple snacks and a place to sit.

  3. 03

    Optional extras

Speedboats, kayaks and other activities are available for those who want them.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Plan this as a single outing with a driver. Leave Kanatal after breakfast, take the road towards Chamba and on to the lake, and aim to arrive before the day's biggest crowds. Start with a simple boat ride on the water, where the scale of the reservoir becomes clear, then take a seat at a lakeside stall for tea.

Water activities listed by travel sites include speedboats, jet skiing, kayaking and canoeing. Pick only what suits you. Older travellers usually enjoy a slow motorboat, and families with teenagers will find more energetic options. Always wear the life jacket provided and use a recognised operator.

Some visitors add the Dobra-Chanti suspension bridge or a stop at New Tehri. Do not try to fit more than two stops; the drives are slow, and the best part of the day is time on or beside the water.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm operator, price and safety gear before boarding
  • Take a driver for the winding roads
  • Carry sun protection and a light jacket
  • Check road conditions in the rains
