Pace: Kaulas Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Kaulas Fort: The fort is huge and the ground is uneven, with wide stairs at the main gate, scrub and broken masonry inside and no shade or seating that is documented. The last part of the road is rough. It is best for fit older travellers who can walk slowly on rough ground; others can enjoy the gate and outer bastions.

Pacing

Pacing a Kaulas trip for parents and children

  • Treat this as a demanding day; the road is long and the fort ground is rough.
  • Hire a car with a driver who knows the final unsigned stretch.
  • Carry water, food and a first-aid kit; there are no facilities.
  • Go in cool months and start early.
  • Sit out the full circuit if you tire; the gate and outer bastions are rewarding.
  • Tell someone your plan; phone signal may be patchy.
