The short answer

Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Worth a half-day if you have a spare day around Kaziranga and like forest walks. It is small and not a big-game site, so go for the springs and birds, and confirm access with the Assam forest department before setting out.

History and context

The story behind Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary

Garampani was notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1952, which makes it one of the older protected areas in Assam. It covers about 6 square kilometres in Karbi Anglong district.

It is surrounded by the larger Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary and belongs to the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong elephant reserve declared in 2003. The name means hot water in Assamese, after the springs in the forest.

Why it matters

Why Garampani Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Most Kaziranga trips are about open grassland and rhinos. Garampani shows the other Assam: hill forest, moist and shaded, with hot water rising from the ground and a primate community that grassland visitors never meet. It makes a useful contrast on a longer stay.

It also forms part of a larger forest complex with the neighbouring Nambor sanctuaries, within the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong elephant reserve. These forests connect Kaziranga's animals to the hills during floods, so a visit helps you understand why the park cannot be thought of in isolation.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Hot spring and waterfall

Natural hot water rises in the forest alongside a small waterfall, reached by steps and short paths.

  2. 02

    Hanging bridge

A suspension footbridge across the stream is the photographic stop most visitors remember.

  3. 03

    Gibbons and langurs

Hoolock gibbons and golden langurs live in the canopy; early morning is the best time to hear and see them.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Garampani is a day excursion from the Kohora or Bagori side of Kaziranga, reached along the national highway towards Golaghat and then into Karbi Anglong. Hire a car and driver, leave after breakfast, and ask your hotel to check that the sanctuary is open and the access road is passable, especially after rain.

On site, the main attractions are the hot spring and waterfall in the forest, the hanging bridge across the stream and the short walks through semi-evergreen woodland. Walk quietly and early; the forest is home to hoolock gibbons and golden langurs, and listening for gibbon calls is as likely to reward you as looking.

Do not expect a safari. The sanctuary is only about 6 square kilometres, facilities are minimal, and the experience is a calm forest walk rather than big-game viewing. Pair it with a lunch stop in Golaghat and return before dusk.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm with the forest department that the sanctuary is open before you drive out
  • Hire a car and driver for the day
  • Carry water, snacks and insect repellent
  • Wear shoes with grip for damp steps and paths
  • Return before dusk; there are no facilities on site
