The short answer

Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Only for committed nature lovers. It is a lightly visited forest with no safari set-up, so go with a local guide or driver, confirm access with the forest office, and do not expect the wildlife viewing of Kaziranga.

History and context

The story behind Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary

The proposal to protect Nambor was first made in 1993, and it was declared a wildlife sanctuary on 27 July 2000. It covers about 37 square kilometres in Karbi Anglong district and is managed by the Assam Department of Environment and Forests.

It adjoins the smaller Garampani sanctuary and the Nambor-Doigrung sanctuary, and the three are part of the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong elephant reserve declared in 2003.

Why it matters

Why Nambor Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Nambor is a reminder that the Kaziranga landscape extends well beyond the national park. It is one of the hill-forest sanctuaries that, with Garampani and Nambor-Doigrung, make up the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong elephant reserve, which gives elephants and other animals room to move away from the Brahmaputra floods.

It is also botanically notable, with 51 orchid species recorded and a long bird and butterfly list. For visitors with an interest in natural history rather than headline animals, a day here adds a different, quieter layer to a Kaziranga trip.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Orchids and butterflies

The forest has 51 recorded orchid species and a wide butterfly list, best seen on slow walks in clear weather.

  2. 02

    Hornbills and forest birds

Several hornbill species and pheasants live here; early mornings give the best chance of seeing them.

  3. 03

    A quiet forest day

Visitor numbers are low, so you are likely to have the paths largely to yourself.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Nambor is not set up for tourists in the way Kaziranga is, so plan it as a guided forest outing. Ask your hotel to contact the forest office at Golaghat, confirm which entry points are open, and hire a driver who knows the Karbi Anglong roads. Start early and carry food and water for the day.

What the forest offers is detail rather than spectacle: butterflies and moths along clearings, orchids on the trees, hornbills and other forest birds in the canopy, and signs of larger animals such as elephants. Walk slowly with someone who can identify calls, and keep to existing paths.

Be realistic about wildlife. Tigers, leopards and clouded leopards are recorded here but are very rarely seen, and wild elephants live here, so follow your guide's advice about distance and quiet.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Contact the forest office through your hotel before you plan the trip
  • Hire a driver and a local guide who know the area
  • Carry food, water and insect repellent for the whole day
  • Wear long sleeves and shoes with grip
  • Keep a safe distance from any elephants and follow guide instructions
