The short answer

Nambor-Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary: what visitors should know first

Only if you already know Kaziranga and want a remote forest day. Facilities are minimal and visitor arrangements are not widely published, so plan it with a local guide and confirm access with the Golaghat forest office first.

History and context

The story behind Nambor-Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary was declared in 2003 and covers about 97 square kilometres in Golaghat district. It is part of the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong elephant reserve, which was declared in the same year and covers about 3,270 square kilometres.

Some sources describe the sanctuary as proposed rather than fully settled, so its boundaries and visitor arrangements may differ from published descriptions.

Why it matters

Why Nambor-Doigrung Wildlife Sanctuary is worth your time

Nambor-Doigrung is one of the three forest sanctuaries that, with Garampani and Nambor, form the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong elephant reserve. It is larger than either neighbour and holds wildlife that has little in common with the Kaziranga grasslands, including gibbons, hornbills and the white-winged wood duck.

Visiting it shows how much of the region's wildlife depends on forest that tourists seldom see. For a naturalist it is a worthwhile addition; for a general visitor Kaziranga itself will be more rewarding.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Gibbon calls

Hoolock gibbons live here and their calls carry across the forest, especially in the early morning.

  2. 02

    Hornbills and rare birds

Great pied and wreathed hornbills, adjutant storks and the white-winged wood duck are recorded in the sanctuary.

  3. 03

    Wild forest corridor

The sanctuary links with Nambor and Garampani, forming the forest that elephants use beyond Kaziranga.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Treat this as an expedition rather than an attraction. Ask your hotel in Kohora to put you in touch with a driver or naturalist who has been into the forest, and call the Golaghat forest office to confirm that access is allowed and which track to use. Leave early; the drive from Kaziranga is long and the last stretch can be rough, especially after rain.

Inside, the interest is in the forest itself: hoolock gibbons calling from the canopy, great pied and wreathed hornbills, and the possibility of elephants on the tracks. Walk only with a guide, keep noise down and give elephants plenty of space.

Carry everything you need for the day. There is no tourist infrastructure to rely on, and mobile coverage may be patchy.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Confirm access with the Golaghat forest office before you set out
  • Travel with a driver and a local guide
  • Carry water, food and a first-aid kit; there are no facilities
  • Start early to leave margin for slow roads
  • Keep well away from elephants and follow your guide
