The short answer

Falgun Mela and Nishan Yatra: what visitors should know first

Come only if you want the festival itself and accept very long queues, road diversions and limited rooms. Most families and older travellers will be more comfortable on a quiet weekday outside the fair.

History and context

The story behind Falgun Mela and Nishan Yatra

Wikipedia notes that during the Falgun Mela a white flag from Surajgarh is hoisted atop the temple, and that it has been raised for more than 300 years after a padyatra of about 152 km. The annual Nishan Yatra, in which pilgrims walk about 17 km from Reengus to the temple with flags, is linked to the fair. Exact dates change each year with the lunar calendar.

Why it matters

Why Falgun Mela and Nishan Yatra is worth your time

The Falgun fair is where Khatu Shyam Ji's popular devotion is at its most visible. A white flag from Surajgarh, on the Haryana-Rajasthan border, is reported to be hoisted on the temple during the fair, carried in a padyatra of about 152 km, and the foot pilgrimage from Reengus is one of the town's best-known customs.

For visitors, the fair shows how a regional shrine becomes a national pilgrimage. It also shows the limits of the town's infrastructure, which is why many people choose to come on a quieter day.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The fair is held in the Hindu month of Falgun, normally February or March, and the temple draws very large numbers of devotees. Many join the Nishan Yatra, a foot pilgrimage of roughly 17 km from Reengus to Khatu carrying triangular flags in saffron, orange or red. Even if you do not walk, the road is lined with flag-bearers, music and volunteers handing out food and water.

Plan very carefully. Rooms near the temple sell out, vehicles are diverted away from the town, and queues can run for hours. Arrive the day before, book a room within walking distance and keep your itinerary flexible. The temple committee has in previous years kept the temple open through the night and suspended special entry, so follow local announcements.

If you want the atmosphere without the walk, stand along the approach road in the early morning, watch the flag-bearers arrive and keep darshan for a different day.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Book a room several weeks ahead
  • Expect diverted vehicles and walk the last stretch
  • Carry water, shade and any medicines
  • Follow committee announcements
  • Keep group members together with an agreed meeting point
