The short answer

Nawalgarh Havelis: what visitors should know first

Yes for a quiet, level cultural day. Choose Podar and Morarka for museum-style visits and allow a car for the drive, which is longer than most Sikar day trips.

History and context

The story behind Nawalgarh Havelis

Nawalgarh was founded in 1737 by Thakur Nawal Singh Ji Bahadur at the village site of Rohili. The Podar Haveli was built in 1902 by Sheth Anandilal Podar, and the Morarka Haveli around 1900 by Jairamdas Morarka; Kamal Morarka converted it into a museum in 1995. These building details come from tourism sources, and figures for frescoes vary.

Why it matters

Why Nawalgarh Havelis is worth your time

The havelis of Nawalgarh were built by Marwari merchants who grew rich in trade and commissioned painters to cover courtyards with scenes of gods, trains and British figures. They are the best-known example of the painted-town tradition of Shekhawati.

For visitors coming from Khatu, they offer a calm, level counterpoint: art, family history and architecture instead of queues. Older travellers often find them easier than hill shrines, since the courtyards are largely level and there is shade, seating and a calm pace that is hard to find in a pilgrim town on a festival weekend.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start at the Podar Haveli Museum, built in 1902 by Sheth Anandilal Podar, which reportedly holds more than 750 restored frescoes and about 22 galleries on Rajasthani culture. Then go to the Morarka Haveli, built around 1900, where frescoes in indigo, red and green were cleaned but not repainted, and where a fresco of Jesus appears in two places.

If you have time, visit Bhagton ki Choti Haveli, a nineteenth-century mansion with unusual images such as a train and a ship, still a private home where the caretaker lets visitors in for a small fee. Most havelis are close together, so a walking tour works well, and a local auto helps in the narrow lanes.

Wear comfortable shoes and carry a wide-angle lens. Allow most of a day.
